I am planning on getting Avid Mech Disc brakes. Should I get the 6 inch or 8 inch rotors? I do general XC with very small drops but would eventually like to do tame downhill stuff. I have a Santa Cruz Bullit.
Thanks

After having 6 inch for a couple of years, I finally upgraded the front to 8. The only reason I upgraded is because I got a second wheelset and wanted to be able to switch them, so I took the opportunity to buy the bigger rotors. The difference, for me, is noticeable. I do major down cross country and really appreciate one finger control. That said, if you do not do giant downhill rides on a regular basis the six inch system is lighter and has loads of stopping power. What I have found is that you go faster, because you know you can always reign in the speed.

I have 6" rotors and they work great for xc and small hills and drops. I'm sure they'd be fine for reasonable DH stuff. But, your riding a Bullit which is not an xc bike. Based on that, my guess is your going to get into Bullit worthy terrain. I say go for the 8" rotors, they may be overkill some of the time but you'll have them if you need them.
