| UGLY.... | FoolCyclist Jun 17, 2003 9:47 PM | | Looks like I will be switching to SRAM X.9 from now on. Although I love XT stuff is has incrementally gottn uglier and uglier since they went to 9 speed. And my favorite disc brakes, the 4 piston XTs are going......damn. Why do we need to change to dual control. Thank God that SRAM is coming out with some great new stuff. The X.9 and X.7 may get first look from now on.

| I feel like breaking my shifters so I can buy those... | GirchyGirchy Jun 18, 2003 6:56 AM | | Those things look awesome. I think I found what I'll switch to when my Shimano Alivio shifters/levers break. Which might not be too much longer, with the viewing window shattered on the left one, and the right one making scary squeaking noises.
Hm, with the new SRAMs, I wouldn't have to worry about the viewing windows getting hit by something.

| yeah, the SRAM stuff does look nice | The Weasel Jun 18, 2003 5:22 AM | | I love SRAMs twist shifters. Anybody have any feelings on SRAM thumby trigger shifters? |
| Too ugly........doesn't performance matter? | a stray from the DH board Jun 18, 2003 6:42 AM | | Are you joking or something? Are you honestly switching to sram just becuase you don't care for the new looks of the 04 XT line up? You made it sound like you have always liked XT components in the past, but now their just too ugly.......WTF
Anyway, it's your choice...so make your bike pretty! |

| Actually..... | FoolCyclist Jun 19, 2003 10:09 PM | | Performace does matter. The reason I would switch is due to the Dual Control. I hate the way that feels. I hated on STI for the road so switched to Campy. Now they bring it to mountain biking and i will probably switch again once high end rapid fire is not available. Oh well, hopefully the big S will realize that Dual Control sucks. But they never figured out that 8 speed was way better than 9 so who knows.

| Oh No | BH Jun 18, 2003 7:13 AM | | Last year I was saying "at least there is XT" now its "at least there is SRAM". I don't like integrated systems and the new XTR dual control shifting felt very awkward during my 15 minute test ride. It shouldn't be like that. When I tested my first road bike with integrated shifters my immediate thoughts were "why didn't they do this years ago?".
I already have trouble with my 160mm XT rotors overheating and now that is my only choice. Not being able to grab multiple low gears sure doesn't help me as a trail rider. And cr@p, I now need to buy a replacement supply of ES/71 bottom brackets because I figured the XT spline would be around for a while since they JUST introduced a new XT crank design. And at least XT compatible disk brake pads, which I go through about every 500 miles, are still available from Grimeca and the aftermarket suppliers.
All this without saying how UGLY those shifters look.
Is SRAM a publicly traded company? They are about to get a huge increase in business. |
| I wonder.... | GirchyGirchy Jun 18, 2003 3:03 PM | | "They are about to get a huge increase in business."
I think I'll agree with that. I wonder if they'll start being installed as standard equipment in more high-end bikes, instead of everything Shimano. I was wondering that earlier today; how come I've never seen a retail bike come with SRAM 7.0/9.0 components? Anyone know?

| Probably because... | woe Jun 18, 2003 4:06 PM | | SRAM hasn't done a good enough job marketing themselves to parts buyers at the big manufacturers. I mean jeez, the SRAM hubs could have easily replaced LX & XT hubs across the board. |
| Actually | The Weasel Jun 19, 2003 6:30 AM | | I thought it was because Shimano sells complete set ups to manufacturers at cheaper rates than non-complete sets. |
