headsets: steel or aluminum?(2 posts)

headsets: steel or aluminum?rpet
Jun 18, 2003 9:02 AM
Hi there-
I'm wondering if there's a rule of thumb for when to use a burlier headset. Are steel-cup headsets only necessary for DH and FR, or should I be considering one for trailriding (4' drops max) and learning to dirt jump?
I have a steel hardtail frame, so maybe ovalization is less of an issue.

thx

Standard Chris King headsets are hella-durable. They're a mix of aluminum and stainless steel. For your purposes they will be plenty strong, and you will never have to buy another headset. Ever. If you somehow managed to ovalize one, replace it with a steelset. (I have never heard of this happening on a King - and they have been used for DH racing for years)
