| My wife wants to try, what's the best buy? Opinions, please | DrewH2O Jun 18, 2003 11:35 AM | | I've been riding a hardtail on technical stuff, and my wife wants to get a hardtail to ride with me some. We'll be doing pretty easy trails and fire roads in Arizona, with consequential climbs and rocks.
She's 5'11", 140-ish?
What is your opinion: for circa $400, entry level bike, hardtail?
thanks a lot, everyone |
| So much to choose from... | MongooseMan Jun 18, 2003 11:52 AM | | Best bet would be to rent a few diffent bikes for her to ride and see how she likes the setup. When you find one she likes, just buy her a new one in that model. |
| for a little more............ | Dave B. Jun 18, 2003 1:27 PM | | $400 isn't going to buy much in a new bike. But just over $500 (retail), you could look at Giant Iguana, Specialized Rockhopper, or others from major bike mfrs. I'd go the extra bit of cash and get a better bike-she'll appreciate it in the long run. |

When we found a model she like we then went online (the classifieds here are a great place to look ) and found that model that was a couple years old lightly used. We got it for $350 including shipping. Just make sure you get lots of pics from any seller so you can see what kind of shape it is in. It wont be brand new, but it is a great way to get better level components and frame cheaper, if she decides she doesnt like the sport, you still have a great bike to do something with (ie canabalize, sell, pawn off on one of your buddies for his wife). Good luck, becareful I discovered that my wife didnt want to get into the sport because of the speed, technical sections and rock gradens, she enjoys the scenery and spending time with me. This can lead to conflicting goals on the trail! |
