difference between 2002 and 2001 NRS headset...bikerboy337

Wondering if the cane crees ZS-2 will work on a 2002 NRS...are the headsets for 2002 and 2001 same, just different manufacturer? or are they specific to the frame...i think the frames are the same...and i can use either headset (FSA or Cane Creek ZS-2)...thanks

The '01 NRS uses a shallow headtube. It can fit the Cane Creek ZS headsets, or the FSA Orbit ZS. FSA refers to the Oribt ZS as "Cane Creek compatible".

The '02 has a deeper cut head tube. While the previous two headsets will fit, only the FSA Orbit Z takes advantage of the extra depth by providing deeper cups for added durability and load distribution.

You can also look at the WTB Innerpeace. I don't know whether this falls into the "shallow" or "deep" cup catagory.

Lastly, you can get ahold of Chris King and see what's up with the Perdido headsets. To fit your bike, you'd need to ream out your head tube an extra bit. Last I checked, these headsets wouldn't be available until they were first picked up by a bike company as an OE part. Even then, you'd have to find a shop with this special reamer.

...of the two types of cups side-by-side for comparison.

I'd encourage you to stick with the stability of the deeper cups, unless you already have a ZS-2 on hand.

If you simply want Cane Creek over FSA, their deep cup internal headsets are due out next year.

I only have a 2000 frame, but it looks like the 2002 and up actually have an INTEGRATED headset, ie. no cups, just a bearing in the frame. i could be wrong but that's what i see on the giant website:

http://www.giant-bicycle.com/us/030.000.000/030.000.006.asp?lYear=2002&bikesection=8793&range=47&model=10459

vs.

i could be way off track though.
They both have integrated headsetsmeloh1

That means that a conventional style headset is "integrated" into the headtube. It works like a regular headset in all respects, it's just set into the headtube instead of on top of it.
I still get confusedmeloh1

Integrated/internal, whatever. It's still a regular style headset that's set into the headtube.

what would happen if i put the cane creek bearing and race into the fsa cup....would it be a bad fit...i'm assuming that wouldn't be good...
Cane Creek's bearings don't fit well in FSA cups (nm)næstep

Integrated vs. Internal, Giant's mistake...næstep
Jun 18, 2003 1:32 PM
Giant has always referred to these as integrated.

I've been told I'm wrong, but as far as I'm concerned Integrated = machined-in cups, ala Schwin's ICBM system and some road bikes. Internal = Zero Stack = pressed-in cups, much like a conventional headset.

I don't understand why Giant doesn't just use the term Zero Stack, which is much less confusing. Integrated headsets have such a bad wrap that I'd think they'd try to distance their bikes from the confusing termonology.

The 2000 NRS frames are a bit different from the 2001 and later frames. I believe some of those frames even uses an adapter and a conventional threadless headset.

that's what i thought...TCP

the 2000 NRS uses a CC zero stack headset. i just thought they might have changed the 2002 to some sort of integrated setup (no press-in cups) that differed from the 2001 since the terminology changed on their website. my 2000 ATX 860 (same as the XTC) frame has the same headtube as the NRS but came with spacers and a 1 1/8" headset that i've since replaced with the CC zero stack. the ZS works just fine but the bearings that cane creek used at the time were not as water tight as the ones they use now.
