| Chain suck (sucks) | CADEX Jun 18, 2003 2:19 PM | | I've noticed a much more frequent occurence of chain suck on my new Stump with 2001 XT setup (was on shop floor for awhile). I've been out of the bike world for awhile so my latest experience was with two sets of Suntour XC-Pro. Does anyone have any pointers to help eliminate the problem. I'm cleaning and lubricating the chain regularly. If there isn't any other solution are those anti chain suck plates that you bolt to the frame across the chain stays still out there? Thanks in advance for the help.

| re: Chain suck (sucks) | Don Sieveke Jun 18, 2003 3:17 PM | | I have recently researched the problem (becaue I too suffer from chain suck, even with all new components and bike (an XCE Turner)). Check out the discussions in the Drive Train forum (do a search for the words chain suck (or chainsuck). You will find an excellent discussion of the problem as well as some suggestions how to resolve it. There's a great article on the subject that you can access by that search. In my case, I have rejected chainline angle (i.e., frame design) as a cause and am focusing on the granny chain ring. I'll probably replace the granny and mid ring with Race Face parts instead of my XT components (even though they are new). Some times even new rings have defects. This may not be your problem, so check it out. Other possibilities: old (stretched) chain, frozen links in the chain, too loose a chain, inadequately cleaned or lubed chain (although these last two just exacerbate a condition already present by some other defect). I wouldn't try that chain guide as my first solution. You're just trying to cure a problem created by some other drive train defect. Good luck! |
