cables rubbing(6 posts)

cables rubbingatlanta

I have a 2002 Spec FSR. The right shifter cable bends down and back to run along the right side of the frame. It is set up completely stock (i haven't messed anything around,) and the cable is rubbing the paint off of my frame right above the fork.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem? I just noticed it the other day, and its way further along than I would like. Still, I would obviously prefer to stop it from getting any worse.

Thanks

A search would turn up the original postings. In general you'll have to glue something onto the frame so that the cable rubs the protectant and not the frame.

Some variations I remember:

the fuzzy piece of velcro
clear packing tape
thicker clear tape used for sealing headlights, windows, etc
thick clear adhesive films used for art projects, signs

I recently used velcro on the headtube and clear packing tape for other parts of the frame because its what I had on hand.
yup same here.....mtnbikerdude87

Ive been using velcro on all the areas where the cables rub. I think its pretty effective and the paint hasnt rubbed off since. I Use rubbing alcohol to clean the area and dry it then put the velcro on. Lets the velcro stay put and it wont come off (you can stil take it out...)

if you want it to look more clean than a peice of velcro here is a product designed for it, it might be more expensive than a piece of tape but atleast It looks stylish.

Make the right shifter housing/cable take the left route and the left shifter housing/cable take the right route.( will have to take appart the cables from the derailleurs)And if housing length is enough this setup should give to the housing a bent that will keep it away from the head tube. Cables will pass the same way through the bb-tube plastic guide thus will be crossed under the down tube (well, there is a slight change in the entering angle of the cables at the bb but is almost nothing, and I found the way the cables enter the top housing frame stoppers much less forced than the standard setup)
This way you won´t have to glue or add anything to the frame and will look cleaner...and hey! = 0.0$ !

I just tried the lizardskin carbon patches on my brand new Dakar XLT 2.0 and they don't stick. I used alcohol, as directed, to clean the area but they will not stick to an anodized finish. They might work better on a painted surface but don't waste your time or money if you have an anodized finish. Try clear packing tape and be sure to check it after the first ride. I've tried different tapes and some ware through - them cables are tough...
