| Can anyone recommend an XC wheelset? | BlueMountain Jul 16, 2003 9:02 AM | | Am I crazy to think I can get a race-ready disc wheelset for $500? Can anyone make any recommendations? I am a 155-pound XC rider. No huge drops or wicked downhilling (except accidentally when I veer off the trail). I checked the site's product reviews, but that is a mixed bag.
Thanks. |

| Mavic 517s and XTR Hubs or.......... | Hit the Dirt Jul 16, 2003 9:39 AM | | I would recommend trying to get a pair of Tubeless if you are going to use them for racing. That will bring the price up but I bet you can find a good pair if you keep your eyes open. Check out these sites if you haven't already:

| What About American Classic?? | BlueMountain Jul 16, 2003 10:21 AM | | Does anyone know anything about American Classic? They sell wheels with Velocity Synergy rims and American Classic hubs. Apparently about 1600g for the set. There's only one review on the site. |
| Take a look at WTB Laser Disc Lite... | upNdown Jul 16, 2003 11:55 AM | | The Laser Disc Lite hubs are the same as the american classic, just made by WTB and cheaper. I know that WTB sells a wheelset (dunno the price) and there's also a guy named Mike at oddsandendos.com who builds custom wheels off those hubs. His prices are as good as you'll ever find and people say the build quality is great. I've dealt with him personally and would encourage others to do so.
I've been riding a wheelset built with the Laser Disc Lite hubs for a month now. Can't tell too much about a hub in that time. They're amazingly light and spin at least as good as any hub I've ever had. |
| What About American Classic?? | Mr.Moto Jul 16, 2003 12:11 PM | | There have been mixed reviews on American Classic hubs in the reviews. Some of the issues have to do with the older grease port design and later, the type of grease used.
I have a pair of AC disc hubs laced to Velocity VXC's and have had no problems with them so far into my 2nd season of riding on them. I have had a big stick jam into the rear spokes and knock it out of true last year. I trued it back up myself and it seems to be fine. I ride rocky, rooty northern NJ trails and they have held up fine.
Mine weigh in under 1600 g. IMO, they are stiff and light and appear to be quite strong. And based on my set, they should be way less than $500.
One last suggestion - call Mike Garcia at oddsandendos.com. He will discuss you riding needs and budget with you and give you exactly what you need. No more, no less, no BS. Great service and build. Good Luck. |
| Yup. I ride and race a set straight from AmClassic | Duckman Jul 16, 2003 1:12 PM | | bought their std build disc hubs, w/ 14/15 dt comps, blk brass nips, vxc rims. Been tuned once since Nov. and that was recently. Paid $560 shipped including the ti skewers. If i did it over theres some great wheelbuilder over in the wheels forum that can build the same set in the mid-ish $300 range i think. Same hub just Lazorlite wtb logo.
Racing the same set sunday, matter of fact. 1608 is what it should be, but haven't weighed them. The whole bikes(nrs)22.3lbs regardless tho, so i'm not sweat'n it. Been a good solid wheelset, and i ride alot since i'm on a year long vacation. Yup. Sweat. |
