| question about shoes and clipless pedals | walter Jul 16, 2003 4:11 PM | | at my first attempt at going clipless, i bought a pair of shimano shoes that were recommended for my pedals(515), so my question is, am i now stuck with only buying shimano pedals or can these shoes also be used with times or beaters? i know the cleats will come with new pedals but im just wondering if shimano shoes are made specifically for shimano pedals and arent compatable with others. thanks for any input, take it easy. |

However there are shoe designs out there that are not compatable with time pedals without modification. The way to tell is to measure the opening in the tread where the cleat sits, called the cleat bed. The cleat bed needs to be at least 40mm wide to be compatable with Time pedals. Most newer design shoes you won't have a problem with. With the Egg Beaters I haven't heard of any shoe compatability issues yet. You should be good to go with either pedal. If there is a problem 99.9% of the time it only requires a small modification of the shoe tread to make the shoe compatable. The modification usually consists of removing or shaving a small amount of material from a portion of the tread in a small area to create a little extra clearance. You most likely won't have to do this. But there is a possibility.
