| Creaky Bottom Bracket | JekyllSan Jul 16, 2003 6:34 PM | | Hi everyone,
I have a Tomac 78 Special and what bothers me very much is the B.B. creaks. The bike is great, but I just can't find out where the creaks come from and I followed the Shimano's instruction to install the BB as instructed. Some says putting a Teflon tape around the threads will help, some says Loctite, grease will help as well. I replaced a new BB and use every single method except the Teflon tape. Anyone got a better idea or have the experience of fixing this issue. PLEASE HELP ME!!! |
| Teflon tape should do the trick | stoom Jul 16, 2003 7:19 PM | | I have a Ti frame and experienced BB creaking, I tried the teflon tape and pow, problem solved. |
| re: perhaps not BB, but try teflon... more | logbiter Jul 16, 2003 7:27 PM | | since you're already concentrating on the BB, might as well try teflon tape, if it works, then great! if not, well it can be pain to find the culprit.
It can take a long time to track down those creaks... it could be something different than your BB. (ie spindle on square taper crank, seatpost, pedals, etc)
Check this link to the Park Tool site for more ideas http://www.parktool.com/repair_help/creaking_and_squeaking.shtml
and do a search here on creak issues for more ideas on how to isolate squeaks.
-for the BB cups, I use anti sieze compound (has worked better than plain grease for me), and have once resorted to both that and teflon tape to quiet a creak.
Also be sure to check your saddle/seatpost clamp interface (ie lube it)... this one stymied me for a looong time before I figured it out.
good luck,

| Something else to check...... | Cook Jul 17, 2003 8:43 AM | | Give the area around your BB a good cleaning and check for cracks in your frame. Scrape off the inch of mud like I have caked around mine. I took my bike in for a "BB creaking noise" check and they 'think' they have found a hairline fracture by one of the welds at the bottom of the seattube. The verdict is still out on whether it is an actual crack or just a gap between weld and tube that collects grime and 'looks' like a crack. My LBS is scraping away the paint to get a final verdict. It's okay for me, cuz I'll either get a new warrantied frame or my LBS will give my bike a good workover prior to delivery for putting me through the hassle. The only thing that sucks is I lose use of that bike for a while. |
