| Would you replace this tire?? | Jester-Rider Jul 17, 2003 10:25 AM | | If riding in dry, summer conditions - would you replace this tire or let it ride another hundred or so. It is a Panaracer Fire XC Pro 2.1 on the rear. It has about 500 miles on it. Sorry for the little fuzzy pic - I can't seem to get it any better - cheap camera:( |
| a second look | Jester-Rider Jul 17, 2003 10:28 AM | | OK - I've got too much time on my hands - humor me... |
| a second look-it looks beat-and a question for tire guru Shiggy | cbchess Jul 17, 2003 12:58 PM | | Are there busted nubs? it looks like it from these photos. I just swapped out the exact same tire with a little less wear than you've got and I was surprized how much better the new tire did. BUT
are you running fire XC front and back? just get one and put it on the front and move the old front to the back. I get a bit more wear out of mine doing that. I always love new tires for my bike it makes me feel like I got a new bike.
and I always save my old tires. I don't know why.
What do you do with old tires anyway? I've got like 15 old tires in various degrees of wear. what does everyone do with their old tires? Shiggy? |
| you may be too close for the camera to focus | spoon Jul 17, 2003 10:30 AM | | try using macro mode or pulling back from the tire (or zooming out)just a bit. It's currently focused on the skewer.
To answer your question. If it's still giving you the traction you need, why not keep it. If it's causing you to slip out on roots that you didn't slip on before, change it. But it still looks like it's got some tread left. |
| you may be too close for the camera to focus | Jester-Rider Jul 17, 2003 10:33 AM | | This is a pretty cheap HP Photosmart 320 camera - there is only 1 mode - take a pic:)
I think I need to back off a few inches - but i was hoping that folks would get the drift. It seems to still hook up pretty well. Thanks for the input! |
| Though I haven't been around here for some time.... | Cook Jul 17, 2003 10:40 AM | | ...I'm normally the person that finds any cheap excuse to post a photo. ;) That tire looks good to go.
Cheers |

| As long as you're getting traction, keep it. nm. | Ken in KC. Jul 17, 2003 11:06 AM | | . |
| Nope! | Titan Jul 17, 2003 11:12 AM | | My rear tire (exact same model) is more worn than that (the three nubs along the center line are worn to the point of blending together), and I'm enjoying the good summer combination of traction and limited rolling resistance. It's almost a semi-slick. I plan to ride it some more, then swap it out when the weather changes and save it for next summer! |

| Yes | MBA Jul 17, 2003 11:27 AM | | Ok, how bout a different opinion. I have the same tires and replaced mine yesterday. On mine, the four center knobs are just at even. On the two center knobs the high knob is just barely above the lower one (about a 64th of an inch).
From this months "Mountain Bike Action" magazine: "Once you have burned through the first 25% of the tire's tread, you lose three quarters of the tires climbing and cornering traction."
Not the reason I replaced them, and I'm not sure about the "three quarters" number, sounds high to me. |
| Nay, no blocks have ripped off yet. | Jrm Jul 17, 2003 11:31 AM | | Think of it as a semi slick |
| Yes. But I change my tires three or four times a month anyway | shiggy©® Jul 17, 2003 11:52 AM | | If your tire is still working to your liking there is no reason to replace it yet.

| Ditch it. | woodyak Jul 17, 2003 1:23 PM | | Or put it on the front. My rear Fire XC was that worn and the traction was crap. |
| re: Would you replace this tire?? | at_scott Jul 17, 2003 2:19 PM | | I ride panaracer Fire XC's all the time. I replace mine as soon as I see wear between the knobs. If you see a uniform wear pattern between the knobs then the knobbies have worn to the point that the rubber between the knobs is in constant contact with the ground and is starting to wear. The portion of the tire between the knobs is thin and wears very quickly. I speak from experience because I rode a worn one once and got stuck out on the trail when the tire casing finally developed a small hole that allowed a small bit of tube to wear. Luckily, I had a power bar wrapper that I was able to use as a tire boot. |
| re: Would you replace this tire?? | Jester-Rider Jul 17, 2003 7:58 PM | | Good discussion - thanks for all the input. I think I'm going to replace it. If it does not seem to make a difference - I'll know for next time. I can always swapo back to the old one if I do not seem improvement. |
| Update with new tires (see previous post above) | MBA Jul 19, 2003 11:25 AM | | Update: I went on my first ride with the new tires, whet to my usual place accross form my house that I've ridden 100 time. Uphill for 1/2 hour then back down.
Yes the new tires had noticable better traction and I will not hesitate to dump worn tires as I describe above. |
| why replace it? | KL Jul 18, 2003 4:39 AM | | It looks fine. All the knobs have their original shape and none are sheared off. Ride it thru the summer and then get something new this fall.
