| Noises from headset (or near headset) | Calpolyclimber Aug 14, 2003 9:07 AM | | My brand new Hollowpoint Sport has some noises (clunks/creaks) that come from the headset area when I turn the handlebar. It happens mroe when the fork is weighted. Could this be something improperly tightened? Its a new bike and I havn't riden it very hard yet, so I don't think I have screwed anything up. Thanks for any help. |
| stop and check it over | JimC. Aug 14, 2003 9:54 AM | | or you could damage the bike. Check the headset for correct tightness as well as all the front fork bolts. If you're not sure what to do, take it back where you purchased it and ask them to go over it. If you got it mail order, you can do this yourself using wrenchscience.com or sheldonbrown.com or parktool.com as reference, or take it to the LBS and have them do it, I doubt it will cost much.
Noise is bad, you gotta track it down and fix it, IMO, Jim |
| ferrules | Mr Magoo Aug 14, 2003 10:46 AM | | Eliminate the easy stuff first. Follow your bar controls cables to the first point that they touch the top tube of the frame. This cable stop/ferrule interface twists every time you turn the bars. If you put your ear close, you'll be able to tell if its there or the headset. If its the headset, seek help, newbie. If its the stops, slack the cables by shifting and releasing v-brakes and put a little grease in the cups that hold the cables. There, you've made your first diagnosis and repair. |
| Carbon Spacers sometimes cause a popping noise... | Jacksonn Aug 14, 2003 12:21 PM | | I have had experiences with carbon fiber headset spacers popping due to the un-polished rough surfaces on the ends of the spacers. I finally removed the carbon spacers and went back to aluminum.
