| Anybody has problems gaining weight? (non mtb related) | Chann Aug 15, 2003 5:12 AM | | I know it's exactly the opposite problem that most people have. I'm concerned because it is just impossible for me to gain weight, sometimes I even wonder if I have a decease or something.
Anyone tried weight-gaining diets? Is there such thing?
Thanks. |

If you really feel you need to gain weight, see a doctor first to rule out any endocrinological wierdness, then go to a nutrition store and ask about dietary supplements to assist in weight gain (like weight lifters and football players like to use). |
| re: Anybody has problems gaining weight? (non mtb related) | Walt Dizzy Aug 15, 2003 6:22 AM | | You have a problem that most people would kill for!
I'm finally up to about 148 lb, 5'8". Been skinny my whole life. I have a fairly embarrasing lack of upper body muscle, but the 11 lb I've put on in the last 30 years, almost half is muscle. I took up swimming in an attempt to be a triathlete. I still suck (at swimming), but actually have noticable lats. The point is that I found an upper-body related exercise I could stick with, just can't stick with weights. As soon as I stop, the pitiful muscles I built vanish.
I have recently been drinking protein supplement that you put in milk. Use soy based supplement and milk if you are lactose intolerent. Health food stores and some larger supermarkets carry such things. For the first time in 10 years, I haven't lost weight over the summer from my biking, and my swim times haven't slowed. I also have stopped eating huge amounts of cookies and other junk.
Hang out with smaller people, make yourself look big in comparison ;^) Find a woman (I assume)who likes skinny guys. Go to buffets and eat huge amounts of food, outrage all the big folks! Enjoy your natural advantages: only ride uphill. Shower the clydes you pass with scorn.

| Maybe you are deceased. | BadHabit Aug 15, 2003 7:04 AM | | Might be tied to elimination. The old fast metabolism. Food moves so quickly through your alimentary tract that relatively fewer calories are absorbed. Strength exercises and diet will give you more mass, and it will all be muscle. |
| Did... | MRfire - 1 Aug 15, 2003 7:47 AM | | and put on 15lbs in six months - all muscle though. You have to commit yourself to weight training routine no matter what or you'll just add fat. I used MetRX "whey" protein (46grams) shakes and creatine (powder) from GNC - weight training three times a week. Concentrate on exercises like fly's, bench, curls, tricept extensions, and of course lots of crunches. You'll be amazed after just 4 weeks on the improvement. The key is to drink the shakes within an hour after working out AND eat like you regularly would. I went from 6'1", 180lbs to pretty close to 200 now. Chicks dig it too! Good Luck! |
| It's called a gym - check into it | cw Aug 15, 2003 7:55 AM | | j/k...
I assume that you're already going to the gym. If you really are concerned that you may have a medical problem, please see a doctor.
Are you young? If you are, don't worry, your metabolism will slow down as you age. If not, (and you're healthy) it's just the way you are (FWIW, I'm kinda that way too).
If I were you I'd concentrate on strength rather than size. |

| re: Anybody has problems gaining weight? (non mtb related) | Seanmon Aug 15, 2003 9:08 AM | | Just be happy you are thin! People go through huge amounts of trouble to lose weight, so you should be stoked. Like the guy above said, don't sweat it if you are young - metabolism will slow and you will not be an exception. |
| Honestly easy solution... | TrailRiddler Aug 15, 2003 10:48 AM | | ... BEER! One summer of binge drinking should give you a healthy 15 lbs or so. Slow that speedy metabolism right down. But its not all easy work... you gotta be disiplined. My college workout: 6 pack for warm ups (make sure to stretch out that stomache), after you're warmed up, and only after, you may safely attempt a few keg stands (but make sure you have spotters). At this point, you can go into your split routines i.e. I do whiskeys on wednesdays and fridays vokas on thursdays and saturdays (remember, this is personalized for definition, so routines vary here). And most importantly, make sure to cool down with a nice pre pass-out fast food run. Sometimes you can "overtrain" so its a good idea to take a day off once a week. There you go... be disciplined, stick with the work out and before you know it, you've earned that 15 lbs!
Disclaimer: if you are under 21, then substitue beer/alcho with your favorite soda... though you might still end up skinny but just cracked out on caffine. |
| Nutritionist sounds good...... | Chann Aug 15, 2003 10:50 AM | | Thanks for the advice, I made an appointment with a nutritionist. Am I young? well I'm 25, you decide. Do I eat enough? I eat like a pig most of the time. Been skinny my entire life just got tired of it. Thanks for everything. |
| Be careful what you wish for... | jcw Aug 15, 2003 5:25 PM | | I was like you until I turned 28. The combination of natural slowing of the metabolism and reduced activity due to starting my career and the weight started to add up. Slowly at first, but you gain 5 or so pounds a year, and in 10 years you're looking at a porker in the mirror. My advice is - everybody has a weight that they are predisposed to be at, be happy with the fact that you're on the much preferred end of the scale. Believe me, in 15 or 20 years all those "bigger" guys will be looking at you with envy. |

| Move to JAPAN: or How I Became Tall. | Sprocketeer Aug 16, 2003 4:10 AM | | Seriously, if you want to feel taller, stronger, heavier, like you're a great driver, or damn brilliant at calculating change move to Japan. I live in Japan, six years now, and I've never felt short or thin since.
I'm huge here--just shy of 5'9". I can see over crowds without hopping. Everyone looks up to me. And I'm an exotic (white, English speaking guy). |
| have the same problem! | Shmidt Aug 16, 2003 9:18 AM | | I lost 10lbs after riding 40lbs BigHit for 2 weeks. I eat everything I can and still 130! The suspension doesn't work for me, it launches me over the bars |
