| Rear V-Brake Mounts | Bent Spoke Aug 15, 2003 7:33 AM | | Have decided to go with Avid Mech disc brakes and was wondering what everyone else does with the V-brake posts. Wish they were not on the frame to begin with.
Thanks, Bent |

| re: Rear V-Brake Mounts | uber-stupid Aug 15, 2003 9:03 AM | | I unscrewed the posts, and installed X-lite plugs. I looked for a pic, but couldn't find one, because their site is screwing up.
Basically they're aluminum plugs that screw into the holes in the mounts where the brake bosses were. They're not really necessary... unless you're one of those of use who cringe at the idea of getting mud and gunk into those threads... even if you know you'll never use em again. They thread in with a simple allen key, and come in various ano colors. Personally, I think it's a nice touch.
The cheaper alternative is to lightly grease the threads, and fill with silicone, finishing with a round piece of paper, cut to fit the hole, stuck on top of the silicone, which you can paint when it dries. The silicone can be removed if you need to later (as long as the threads are greased) and you can match paint perfectly this way.
The other off-the-deep end option for the back is to heat em up and pop em off, since the whole mount is just brazed onto the frame in some cases, and spot paint. Of course, it's a good idea to strip the paint around that area to make sure they're brazed on and not welded. It'll look like unholy hell. But hey, they're off completely, no muss, no fuss. Of course, you'll never be able to put the V-brakes back on if you ever decide to turn the frame into a commuter/beater.
As for the posts on your fork, if you have a marzocchi, you need to get special screws to replace the posts, since they're actually a structurally important part of the fork. Other forks you can just thread em out and replace with regular screws or silicone. |
