Good setback seatpost - help me outxendicus

I feel a little too far forward on my Superlight and am looking for a good setback seatpost for no more than the cost of a Thompson set back ($79). Anyone out there have some suggestions?

I second Fred's recommendation for the XY — it's not a Thomson, but unlike the Thomson gives a full inch of setback and has a relatively compact clamp design. It survived my heavy ass trouble free for the year I used one.

The Salsa Shaft is also worth looking into. The tilt mechanism is a beautiful design. It offers a little less setback than the Race Face — maybe about 7/8" — but still a little more than Thomson. My wife only has a handful of rides on hers but so far, no problems.

If you want a lot of setback, take a look at Easton's offerings. I don't have any experience with their posts, but I believe they'll get you over 1.5" of setback.

I've had good experience with RaceFace XY! check the reviews for some minor caveats (ie clamp rotation on hard hits to saddle and some creaking issues- i've had both)
- also check the new version of the prodigy, looks about the same as the Easton ea70's clamp.
(some good deals to be had out there on the XY... email bill larson he had some for as low as $45 a while back wlarson@stdairy.com ) I don't know the link if he's got his website up and running yet.

I haven't tried the salsa shaft, but it's a great price, about 1" setback

I've been running an '03 Easton EA70 (~1.3" setback) for almost 1yr w/o a single problem (235 lb XC rider on a SantaCruz Tazmon FS)... I picked it up on ebay for ~$60 shipped from O2bikes(=beyond bikes- who took a while to ship... then sent wrong diameter, but sent a topeak alien multi-tool w/ the right diameter finally.)

good dirt,
Serge

OH yeah... also the Titec Hellbent (1.5" setback and a bit heavy, which they had for a steal in their hotdeals section here http://www.titec.com/department.asp?deptid=9).. limited seatpost sizes though for the deal!

I'm using one on my DH bike after stripping the grooves on a cheap post, It's a really strong and clean set up that I would use on my XC bike any day (if my Easton failed!). Best of luck.

The really cheap. Kalloy Uno's. Not the lightest things out there, but for $25 they are respectable. Last two weighed in at 240 and 258g respectively. Another nice point about the Uno's is they are available in just about every size needed.

Not as cheap but a bit nicer. Ritchey WCS. Should be able to get it for around $45. Great customer service, pretty light (My full length 27.2 was 232g), adjustable.

depends -- as far as seatposts go...næstep

...I agree, Thomson's are a tough one to beat. But realize their setback posts don't offer a whole lot of setback (~1/2"), and the huge clamp area eats into that by eating into the maximum available rearward positioning of the seat. Thomson's biggest liability up to now has been their limited lengths in setback sizes, but they've recently begun making them in the 410 length for a select number of sizes, they're just not widely available yet.

another vote for Salsa...cloughja

I started using the Salsa "shaft" post about a month ago and it is great. The tilt and clamping mechanisms are rock solid and allows for alot more setback than the Thomson post. Plus, you can get it for a little over $50 with shipping from Jenson USA.
