How many of you have something like a lizard skin protecting your chain stay? Its not too expensive but $15CDN. Just did not know if it was really worth it or not.

Thanks

On aluminium stays I use cloth tape (like Cat, or hockey tape... whatever's in my toolbox). That's maybe $1 worth of tape. I don't do this on steel frames because the tape holds water.

An old innertube, sliced lengthwise and secured by zipties, works well too..

sorry for my not knowing but I am pretty new to the sport and I am trying to soak up everything I can off these great forums.

So the chainstay is something I will want to one way or another protect the best I can? Norco has a sticker there, but that won't do jack all I don't think. The frame is Alum. btw.

If I don't do this, overtime will the chain cause considerable damage? I will be riding singletrack technical trails a lot.

Thanks
John
Basically protects the paintjob from chainslap during descents..World B Free

And youre right -- the sticker might protect the paint for the first couple rides (though the Kona sticker on my JTS is still in decent shape)

If the paintjob is of no concern, I wouldnt bother, though it also quiets things down a bit. Keeping the chain in the big ring on descents lessens the need somewhat

almost every rider here has them on their FR bikes. Protects paint and a side benefit is a more silent ride.

Chain splap causes a lot of dammage, paint chips and noise.

I use lizard protection on both my bikes (kona stinky and voodoo bizango)and am happy with them, they offer a good cover are washable and do a good job muffling the noise.

I used an old inner-tube and some electrical tape.

Cut the tube to the length of your chainstay
slice it lengthwise
wrap lengthwise around chainstay
cut to proper width
secure on back and ends with electrical tape

Has held up fine for me for over a year, and is real clean-looking on my black frame.

ya know the stuff you use for tenspeed handle bars, it cheap, thicker than conventional tape and comes in many patterns and colors if you want to match your frame.

Another thing you can use is tennis grip tape. It works really well and you can choose your thickness of it. Just stick it on like you would on a tennis racket and then tip tie both ends down.

I bought a section (about 4') of clear vinyl tubing (1.5" OD) from the hardware store - it cost me about $4.00. I just cut a length = to what I need, slit it length-wise and wrap it around the chainstay. Protects without changing color and lasts as long as the bike. Plus I've got enough for my next 3 bikes.
ditto the clear tube, I use 1 foot of 1" OD for about $0.30 (NMcloughja

I use a phone cord..Brace1

Let's see if I can figure out how to post a pic..

A 25' black phone cord was like $4 at Big Lots. I put some silicone tape (similar to electrician's tape except it doesn't have glue and it only sticks to itself) to prevent the ends from sticking out. This thing works like a champ and it's solid.

Doesn't the elevated chain stay eliminate most of the chain slap any way?

Still had some occassionally, plus protects against shoe rub- nmBrace1

I put zip ties on the ends to keep it from unraveling, but after a few minutes, it's so stuck to itself it won't peel off. It's stretchy and conforms to any curves or welds at the chainstay ends.

I've seen lots of folks use a section from a used tire ziptied on. Pretty big and clunky, imho, but very durable.

I have them on both my bikes. They're light, look good, and are unaffected by high temperatures. An inner-tube is fine, but where I live it's bound to partly liquify in August. I also can't help thinking that when the chain slaps an inner-tube there's got to be some friction there.

Lizard Skins (and other like products) clean up easy, can be taken off for cleaning and put back on with no trouble, and the cost is about right considering it will likely never wear out.

The stickers get really nicked up, no doubt about it. They're only good for a few rides.

Agreed with all of the above. Every bike I own has lizzy's, just because they work so well. Light, easy to clean, easy to install and remove, no glue-mess, keeps chain slap silent, protects your investment.

a piece of an old out of use wetsuit, cut to fit and held in place with electrical tape only on Al frames, recycle reuse...
