| What do you consider SPAM because...? | Annihilation Principle Aug 15, 2003 4:57 PM | | Here's the deal. I've got a bunch of stuff to sell. I made a website. I also bought two ads for bigger items right here on MTBR classifieds. There is no real place on the classifieds to list my website and say "Hey, I have a bunch of stuff to sell." What are your thoughts on this? How can I actually publicize the stuff I have to sell without the nay sayers nay saying?
No. I'm not gonna give you the website address as of yet cause all you SPAM yellers and SPAM T-shirt grumblers and whatnot will yell and whine and bitch and moan at me.
STAN |
| Um...you could see the top of the this page for starters... | Bianchi4Me Aug 15, 2003 5:49 PM | | "Please do not post personal ads on this board. If you are interested in selling an item, please use the Classifieds section of our site."
That seems pretty clear, and it doesn't require any whining or grumbling by the Spam police.
If you have an interesting item that you think people would like to learn about, you are certainly welcome to post information on the proper board about that item. Discussing a new or little-known product to inform people about it, if done honestly and with due disclosure (i.e., you sell them as well as discuss them), is useful to people who came here to learn about MTBs.
The "I got a bunch of common stuff on sale, check it out." is just there to make money for the poster. That's simply freeloading on the folks who keep the site running by paying to advertise, and is clearly NOT what MTBR is all about. If you have a lot of inexpensive items, they belong on Ebay. With the high listing fee on MTBR, it's not practical to sell low cost items here. |
| Well, Bubba. It's like this. | Annihilation Principle Aug 15, 2003 6:09 PM | | You obviously didn't read my post too well, because you didn't address it at all- now did you? Well, other than to bitch me out of course.
I have purchased two ads for high priced items that many of you might find exciting and attractive. Not a big deal. I was happy to do it.
I have a bunch of stuff that would be exciting and attractive to a whole bunch of people here on MTBR.com. Yes, I could put them on E-Bay, as I will be doing. But, this is a forum for mountainbikers- is it not? I could see a ton of people here being interested in what I've got whether it is a big bang item or something cheap.
Yes. It's obviously to make money for the poster. That would be me. But I'm not selling the stuff for a lot. And I'm trying to save someone who frequents this site the trouble of randomly searching all over E-Bay and other classified sites. And, I'm trying to save them a lot of time and effort with bidding process plus some money as I don't plan on selling anything for a lot.
You didn't give me any answers did you. You are just like the SPAM police.
And by the way... I contribute a fair amount of my opinions, ideas, and technical knowledge on this site. Go ahead. Do a search. You'll see. I'm not BS'ing you. You know- I'd be more than happy to spend more on advertising on this very site right here, but um... like i asked, where would you like me to do it? It seems a bit silly to be buying a ton of $2 ads (and by the way, I've spent $14 on two ads (which I hope will support this site)) when it would be nice to purchase maybe one or two more for "general everything" or a "a whole bunch of stuff" to sell.
Thank you for your time- If you have a valid answer post it, and quit posting rehashing the mindless SPAM drivel that the SPAM police (obviously like yourself) like to spit out.
Good day Sir,
STAN |
| Sowwy Stanwy, but youwr wong.... | Locoman Aug 15, 2003 6:31 PM | | As a formal representative of the SPAM police, I declare you SPAM. Sorry if you can't accept this "Sir", but you are.
Read the following very carefully "In addition to #3 above, please do not post Classified Ads/Want Ads/Trade Ads in the message board forum." This is a condition of posting on this board. I didn't make it up. As was pointed out to you, read the guidelines.
Dig it? It means dooo nooot poooost classsiffffied aaaads/waaant addds/trade addds iiin theeee messsaggge boarddddd forrrrrrummmm.
When you spend the big $2 in the classifieds, put your link there.
End of story. |
| Good God man... Is no one actually going to address my question | Annihilation Principle Aug 15, 2003 6:42 PM | | So, how exactly am I wrong? I have said absolutely nothing to be right or wrong about. I have offered questions. That's it. Oh, yeah. Other than an attack or two on the SPAM busters. But, that is nothing to be right or wrong about either. That would be fact. You folks seem to take yourselves a bit too seriously.
What the hell then? You people are not actually answering my questions. Nor are any of you giving me any options here. You are all spouting the same thing though worded differently, so I can't actually say "same exact thing". Where in the classifieds do you want me to post this for the maximum exposure? How 'bout that? Is that a simpler question for you to answer?
You'll notice I've made a point not to place an "advertisement" on this site, though by this point who knows. I'd say it's obvious I have stuff to sell, but don't quote me on that.
And too you- there is no Sir applicable. I proclaim you SPAM with melted cheese on top (not good cheese either- packaged, processed, yellow cheese),
STAN |
| Silly Stan.... | Locoman Aug 15, 2003 6:54 PM | | Ok, where can you post your advertisements for maximum exposure? Here's your answer. Contact this sites webmaster or administrator. If you pay enough cash you'll get your own pop-up ad to annoy people.
News flash: Advertising isn't free. These forums are not for you to get free advertising. Others have to pay for it. Why do you think you're exempt? --Because you spent $2 on two 'big ticket items' your $4 entitles you to SPAM? Please... |
| Did I say I was exempt. No. Absolutely not. | Annihilation Principle Aug 15, 2003 6:57 PM | | Did I say I was looking for free advertising? No.
As a matter of fact, I said I'd be willing to pay more money.
You appear to be overlooking that
And, by the way- I spent $14 bucks. Went for the whole hog on it.
Oh yeah- I did say I was happy to do it too.
Someone tell me how much an annoying pop-up would be. I may just go that route to make you all happy (or at least a little happier).
Thank you Cheese Guy. Perhaps if anyone is silly around here, it would be you?
STAN
P.S.
Hey Cheese Guy. You said in a previous post or two that you went to Beyond Bikes. Are you in San Diego County too? What kind of riding do you do? Where do you ride at? |

| Have another beer and make it a cold one. | Annihilation Principle Aug 15, 2003 7:14 PM | | I'm getting kinda hungry myself. I guess I'll go track down some food somewhere or other.
I'm thinkin' maybe you didn't see the addendum/Post Script on the last post there.
Night night Cheese guy- have a good one.
And thanks for the help on tracking down that info. I'll get right on that and hopefully have a good, annoying pop-up ad for you early next week. Look forward to it.
STAN :-p |
| Perhaps I misunderstood your question. | Bianchi4Me Aug 15, 2003 7:34 PM | | You asked:
"How can I actually publicize the stuff I have to sell without the nay sayers nay saying?"
My response was that you should simply NOT use MTBR for self-promotion purposes and pointed out where this was a plainly stated policy right on the top of the page. I suggested you use Ebay if your lower cost items don't justify the (relatively high) listing fee on MTBR.
That seems a lot like an answer to me, just not the one you wanted. I apologize if it seemed like a personal attack, but I guess I didn't really understand what you expected to hear. |
| Key Word | Drewdane Aug 16, 2003 7:26 AM | | "... this is a forum for mountainbikers- is it not? "
The key word is FORUM, as in a venue for the exchange of ideas, information, opinions and stories, as opposed to a Bulletin Board or Classified Site (AKA a MARKET), which is a venue in which to exchange goods and services, usually for money.
See the distinction?
Posting a thread for the sole purpose of selling stuff is inappropriate for this FORUM, it even says so in the user guidelines at the top of the page... |
| Yes-Key Word. Definition by Webster's New World Dictionary | Annihilation Principle Aug 16, 2003 8:41 AM | | Forum 1. the public square of an ancient Roman City 2. an assembly, program, etc. for the discussion of public matters.
So from that, a Forum can and perhaps often does include discussion on the sale of items. And from your definition, you include "information". This could be construed as information regarding items for sale.
Again, you didn't answer my question either. And, I've noticed that noone has actually addressed what SPAM is. I already know, so I don't care what you answer from this point on. I'm done with this conversation as all of you are horrible debaters and apperantly don't want to address the actual question or don't have an answer.
Oh- I should have thought about my original question in more depth before posting it. I never should have mentioned SPAM at all, because that appears to be where the focus of your attention is going. I should have asked "I have made a little, personal website with some stuff I want to sell on it. There are far too many items to purchase ads for in the classified and no clear catagory as to where they should go anyways. I've bought a couple ads there for the bigger items, but what ever should I do so people can go find my site? There is a lot of good stuff there that probably many of you would be interested in or could use. Do any of you fine, intelligent, helpful people have any idea how I could make my little site of stuff known to people who frequent this site without being a bother?"
Seriously, I'm done with this now and think it's just silly.
Tah tah. Have a nice day. Ride hard. Ride fast. Don't fall down.

| Nice- Personal attacks aren't allowed per the site rules | Annihilation Principle Aug 16, 2003 11:45 AM | | Please remove the post by the Rump Ranger. Unless he's looking for rump to range on. Then perhaps a personal section should be added to the classifieds as well.

HAHAHAAHA!!!!
I was supposed to stop this thread, but I can't help myself.
It keeps me entertained.
Now go ahead... I left myself wide open on that. Next please. |

| I have a used 3 year old shoe for sale, interested Stan -nm? | deller Aug 15, 2003 6:39 PM | | |
| Sure. Why not. Always interested in a deal. | Annihilation Principle Aug 15, 2003 6:44 PM | | What kind of shoe is it? What size is it? Is it the left or right shoe? What kind of shape is it in? How bad does it smell? Why are you selling it? What are the odds of finding a matching shoe? Should I look on E-Bay for a match?
Thanks. Lookin' forward to some more info.
STAN |
| Sure. Why not. Always interested in a deal. | Spam Police Department Chief Aug 16, 2003 5:23 PM | | Stan, maybe you should forget this site and move on to another sport. |
| Perhaps you're right Chief | Annihilation Principle Aug 17, 2003 6:04 PM | | I guess I am gettin' a little soft around the middle. I'm feeling a bit aerobically challenged these days too. You know that 95' heat at 9:30 in the morning was devistating. I wanted to quit. I really, really did (no- I didn't. I made that up). And, too top it off, My climbing skills are decidedly marginal right now.
I've got admit, I really did have a lot of fun running down Anderson Truck Trail down here in the San Diego Area all morning. But you're right. I probably shouldn't be having fun. Even if my descending and tech skills are pretty on my game. Even then... but I should still quit.
And seriously, what does moving on to another sport have to do with anything?
I salute you Chief,
STAN
you might want to take a look at my reply to jeezus below. |
| Perhaps you're right Chief | The Spam Police Department Aug 17, 2003 8:07 PM | | When you move on to another sport, you will no longer be here. Get it?
Chief |
| You know... you could move on yourself. | Annihilation Principle Aug 17, 2003 8:59 PM | | Then neither of us would be here. That would probably make a world of people happy. But then again, I'm already happy, so it really doesn't matter to me all that much what you do with yourself. Even though I'm a misanthrope, you're welcome to stick around. Who knows- you could keep things entertaining.
But then again, from just two examples of your behavior, I don't think so. Get it?
Me on the other hand... I'm about as exciting as it gets.
Hail to the Chief Chief,

| Let's face it....current Classifieds don't get a fraction... | Ebo Aug 16, 2003 7:02 PM | | of the traffic the old "grass roots" classifieds did. Although I disagree with Stan's approach, he brings out the weakness of the BS $2 postings. Advertisers want traffic and thats what they pay for. I rarely even check the classifieds because they don't work now and won't in the future. Three thousand listings of which 80% are old and worthless. My 2 cents. Flame on Johnny.... |
| if you rarely check, how do you know they don't work? | airwreck Aug 16, 2003 10:41 PM | | I much prefer the mtbr classifieds over e-bay. We visit, buy and sell things regularly, and have since the early mtbr days. There are other "grass roots" classified systems out there, the choice is yours.
Eric |
| if you rarely check, how do you know they don't work? | Ebo Aug 17, 2003 7:37 AM | | I have probably 100 trades on Mtbr, but almost all of them were before they changed their system. Since then, all the small to medium priced stuff has dried up. There are many "Stans" out there wanting to buy, sell, trade stuff that is sitting in their garages. Why shut out all this activity, charge two dollars per listing, and still have zero customer profile. Rant over. |
| BTW Ebo- I didn't ever at any point... | Annihilation Principle Aug 17, 2003 9:25 PM | | I didn't ever at any point post any SPAM or have any intention of doing so. I was posing a question to these folks who apperantly have no answers.
Just for your FYI.
so as far as my approach goes, negate that comment please.
Thank ya kindly,
STAN |
| Not true at all | andy f. Aug 18, 2003 2:20 PM | | I recently sold a Fox Vanilla 125 RL and a set of Magura HS-33 brakes via the classifieds. I paid the $2 plus the extra fee to get my ad at the top of the listings. I got 8 responses to my Magura ad within 4 hours and queries continued to come in for days after I altered my ad to say the brakes were sold. I had 5 emails regarding my fork first thing in the morning after I posted the ad.
I've been coming here before there were separate general/brake/passion etc. message boards, when D8 was known as JAAFUN. Selling items via the mtbr classifieds is faster and easier than ever. |
| re: Ad deleted, discussion remains. | jeezus Aug 17, 2003 9:38 AM | | stan, could you please shut up and go back to posting your blurry pics of your bike. thank you & good night. |
| Here's my bike(s)- Non-Blurry. Just for you jeezus. | Annihilation Principle Aug 17, 2003 6:12 PM | | and shouldn't you be out riding at 10:38am in the morning? i know i was. obviously, you did a search on me. i did a search on you. you know what. you're a troll. a lurking, smelly troll. i notice you have no other posts anywhere on this site. i notice that you don't have a complete profile. i notice you don't have any pics (blurry or otherwise). and i noticed you really had nothing to say. i haven't posted in 24 hours. so, i did shut up for a while. :-D i'm pretty much done with this topic. i'm just out to have a bit of fun now.
To all of you who are taking a look at this- yes, i was a bit bored when I got home from Anderson Truck Trail this morning. It was quite hot. So I decided to take some nice, nice pictures of my bikes.
I'm well aware that the saddle on Foes Baby has a bit of an upward tilt. I noticed that riding. Can't remember how that happened. It didn't used to be that abrupt.
Hey- can any of you all tell me what that old, black bike on the end is? I might have a prize for you.
Talk to you all soon- STAN (and have a great night. I will- Fatty Fish Burritos from Juanita's Taco Shop for dinner for ME!!!)
