| Scalpel 3000 vs. Superlight | Cheezhead Aug 15, 2003 5:39 PM | | Hey all,
Going to race expert next year, and I figured that to keep me motivated to train all winter, I would get a lightweight full-suspension racing machine. I'm coming off a Trek hardtail.
I'd like to know your thoughts on the Scalpel 3000 vs. Superlight. I know they're both light, but which is actually lighter if built up with the same components (new XTR)?
Also, I know that the Superlight is single pivot, and that it has a bit more travel than the Scalpel. This worries me a bit because in races I make my living on the climbs. That's my chance to take time from everyone. But at the same time, I'm wondering if the extra travel of the Superlight will be a blessing for downhills. Will the single pivot of the SL bob a bunch? And is the suspension on the Scalpel adequate for smoothing out fast descents?
Like I said, I'm coming off my hardtail, which i really love, but I'd like to build up a full suspension ride that's actually lighter than my hardtail but still climbs extremely well. Thanks for any input!

I can comment on the Scalpel, I don't have the 3000.
But I do have a scalpel 800.
I liked the headshok better than the lefty . So I got the 800 and upgrade the componets to XT.
Built up my weighs about 25 lbs or so.
I had a Jekyll 3000 . It was ok .
nothing as nice as the Scalpel for the riding I do.
the suspension of the scalpel does smooth out downhills and is nice on the climbs with nearly no bobbing.
I really like mine.
for a FS XC rig , riding and racing it does very well. |
