Motocycle fork oil ok for bike(11 posts)

Motocycle fork oil ok for bikeksmoke
Sep 18, 2003 10:42 AM
Hi there,

Just reading some stuff over in the fork section about motorcycle fork oil (turned into more of an argument about what 'w' means!)

Anyways, is motorcycle fork oil fine to use for a mountain bike fork? Nothing wierd in it that would cause the bike fork to behave strangely??

LBS charges a small fortune for Fork Oil.
I use Silkolene...mac

Like Mac above, I use Silkolene but I'v heard of others using Spectro and Bel-Ray. I had to get a litre of 5 and a litre of 10w to mix and make 7.5w for my Vanilla. I think I paid 8 bucks a litre where they want like, 24 bucks for a litre of the Fox stuff. Ouch!
Cartridge suspension fluid...[GregR]

Moto shops carry fork oil in two flavors. Regular and stuff designed for cartridge suspension forks. What you are looking for is the cartridge suspension fluid (most MTB forks use cartridge damping).

Most of the stuff at the moto shops is cartridge fork compatible, but there is some that is not. The other stuff may contain additives that can damage the internals of cartridge forks. Some of the good brands are: Silkolene, Golden Spectro, Maxima, and Bel Ray.

Read the label, many will specify use for cartridge suspension forks.

Golden Spectro 125/150 (7.5w) cartridge fork fluid. Best stuff I've ever used. But Silkolene and others work very well too.

I just purcahsed a Manitou Black Elite Air which had lost some oil during shipping. Checked the manual and found that the only recommended oil is Maxima motorcycle fork oil. Along the lines of "Do not use any for oil other than Maxima......" It took me at least ten calls to find a local shop that stocked it - of course none of the bike shops that sell Manitou forks do, only a local motorcycle shop. Interestingly enough when I started to ask the local bike shop service guys "well if you don't sell Maxima oil what do you use to fill customer's forks on overhauls". They all replied that they use one of the more common brands of bike fork oil (finish line, etc). In theory, I think this kind of "service" could give Manitou a good way out of warranty repairs. I digress.
Marzocchi sez...Annihilation Principle

If you actually talk to a Marzocchi tech guy or race support guy or something, they recommend (and use Spectro Gold). I've used Spectro Gold for years in both motorcycle and bike forks. It's the best I tell ya. But any good quality fork oil will work. It's all oil. Just choose the right weight fork for your needs. Remember heavier makes it stiffer. Lighter makes it squishier.
