| Questions About Tire Wear | Whitey Sep 18, 2003 11:10 AM | | Hi, all. As I was airing up my tires this morning before a ride, my rear tire felt weird. When I looked closer, I noticed that 10-12 side lugs were almost completely torn off on each side. This tire is a panaracer xc pro with maybe 150-200 miles on it. I run Stan's no-tube in both tires on a Kona Bear, and I ride mostly xc with some technical stuff. I have never had this kind of problem before. I bought two of the panaracers on ebay for a great price. Is it possible that although the tires were new, that they were already old (manufacturing date)? Anyway, I am stumped. Opinions?
Thanks, Whitey |
| A couple of possibilities... | WarrGuru Sep 18, 2003 12:18 PM | | 1) Are your tires the 127TPI ones made in Japan? If not, that might be the issue. The 60 TPI ones made in Taiwan are not as good.
2) Have you used Stans in other tires before? If you're riding with VERY low air pressure, the side lugs may be contacting the ground while you're going straight. The side lugs are reinforced to take a sideways force, but are not designed for flat braking forces.
3) Like you mentioned. Maybe the tires are old and cracking. Maybe they were left in the heat and sunlight while being stored.
That's all I could think of.
Good Luck!
p.s. I have been riding on Fire XC Pros for over 2000 miles (3 sets)and never had the side lugs rip off of the tire. They get a little torn up from riding in sharp rock gardens, but that's about it. |
