| Giant Rainier crankset upgrade question | Joel LSU Sep 18, 2003 3:01 PM | | I bought a Giant Rainier yesterday and I want to upgrade the crankset. I'm not sure about the size of the bottom bracket and it's not on the corp. website. Does anyone have any info or suggestions on an upgrade? I am thinking about the Truvativ Firex with DH bottom bracket. I just don't know what size to order.

| Probably best to call Giant customer service at ... | Spain Sep 18, 2003 5:02 PM | | 800-874-4268. I too ride a Rainier ('01 version), and the guys in customer service have always been glad to provide me with the info I've needed when it comes to upgrades. I've asked them about b.b. size, stem length, etc. That's the best way to go to be ABSOLUTELY sure. Good luck and enjoy the Ranier; it's a great bike. Oh, by the way, I upgraded my crankset to the XT and have been very pleased with it. |
| It's actually really easy (with a ruler and the web)... | næstep Sep 18, 2003 5:18 PM | | First, measure your BB shell with a ruler:
In your case, it should be 68mm (2-21/32" in the photo), so you'll need a 68mm BB shell.
The second number, spindle length, is dependant on what crank and BB combo you choose. You've decided on Truvativ BB and crank, so this Truvativ page shows that you'll need their 113mm spindle to get the 48.5mm chainline you want:
