Creaky Blur is creaky no more!(7 posts)

Creaky Blur is creaky no more!Nat

After months of looking, leaning, pushing up and down, prodding, cleaning bearings, lubing bushings, tightening bolts, loosening bolts, inspecting welds, and general head scratching, I FINALLY found the source of the conniption-causing creak on my bike. It was that tiny little bolt at the frame-mount end of the shock. The one below the top tube. A shmear of grease and ahhhhhhhhh...silky quiet bike again. My work is done.

i have found that the blur is the best bike ever, i also have found that with all those pivots that there is some maintenance involved. i have pressed out my bearings and found that santa cruz has lock-tighted them into the frame and i think that the lock tight brakes down and allows the bearing to move. i cleaned that out and replaced it with a light coat of grease, just like a creaky bottom bracket. i also found that i needed to tighten the pivots after the first ride. the grease will push out and the bearing will seat to the frame.

If all that maintainence is needed just to maintain the pivots, that is a strike against it. I've also heard of the bushings wearing out really fast. Also you can only run a 100mm fork (or void warranty) and it only has a 2 year warranty. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to own a Blur and I may actually get one for next year's racing season but is it really the best?
Those reservations are stopping you?Nat

As far as maintenance goes, I haven't done dick to my bike other than trying to isolate that creak, and my bearings have been completely trouble-free since day one. Also I've never let warranty make or break the deal.

ride one and see for your self that it a awsome bike! the super x kit from santa cruz includes a 100mm fox float rl fork. the work i did on mine is a test for my own personal fun, however it works. and i will email my s.c. rep and fill him in on it. bushing??? no bushings, just sealed cartage bearings. the maveric and the kieln palomino have bushings... too bad for them ;) good luck with next season!
