Need a cruiser bike FAT TIRE recommendation...næstep
Sep 19, 2003 5:50 AM
Converting an old Stump Jumper into a 7-speed cruiser for my wife.

I'm not so much looking for a "road" tire (i.e. the Kenda Kwest 1.5 would probably be too skinny for this application). Need a fatty pavement pounder.

Weight, speed and cornering ability are not very important on this bike. Ride quality, noise/vibration and appearance are considerations.

Conti Town & Country 2.1 looks fat and round. Any others out there that I should consider, perhaps with more "style" points??? Choice of olors would be bonus.

I built my wife a bike path cruiser from a mountain bike frame a few months ago and she loves it. I put Kenda Kozmik Lite 1.95 tires on it. They were on closeout for around $12 each from one of the mail order companies. They seem to be a very good tire for the type of riding she does, which is pretty much all on asphalt. They give a compliant ride, very little rolling resistance since they are a semi-slick, and have some shallow lugs on the sides in case she rides on a gravel or hardpack trail occasionally. The other day I mentioned to her that they are actually a fairly high performance MTB racing tire designed for hardpacked trails, and I think she was amused. The ones I got are kevlar beaded, and weigh only 395 grams (it states this right on the sidewall in bright gold lettering). Her frame is bright red, and the gold lettering on the sidewalls look good with it. The Conti Town and Country is a good tire also. My brother-in-law has used these on several long charity rides on the road.
t&c's good... what about a 'semi-slick'?logbiter

I used to run the T&C's on my commuter, excellent for street and decent on fire-road/gravel... they are pretty heavy though (over 700g, I do believe)..
I'm currently running some ritchey speedmax kevlar semi's (2.1) that I like on my commuter(got on closeout some time ago), which are much lighter than the t&c's and have a pretty large air volume to help smooth things out, especially for my 220lb wt. Their volume is almost as much as my python air-lite's (which are also pretty low rolling resistance when pumped up hard!)
I got some bontrager semi-sliks for a friend cheap, and he likes them a lot... not sure about their volume though, casing doesn't seem as tall/wide as my ritchey's though.
I'm thinking about some of those lite kenda's whenever these wear out.

good luck,
Serge
Thanks guys. Leaning towards Lover's Souls or Big Apples...næstep

Surprised me how often this question comes up, I just had to know what to search for while digging through the archives.

Looks like the Kosmic got replaced by a knobbier Kosmic II.

Checking out the IRS Lover's Soul 2.25,

Schwalbe Big Apple 2.35,

And the heavy Maxxis Hookworm 2.5.

The Big Apples look like really nice tires.tl1

But I'm a huge Schwalbe fan anyway and have read good reports about them. The Hookworms are ridiculously heavy like you said. I have a pair of Michelin Wildgripper Rocks on my KHS Nexus cruiser and they're OK, nothing special and I think available in only 1.75" size.
How 'bout the super-bitchen' 26x2.1 Kenda Flame?NuMexJoe

Only $12.99 and lots of attitude. See http://aebike.com/site/page.cfm?PageID=30&SKU=TR5183

Yep, I saw that one too late...næstep

...after I already called around, got frustrated and ordered the afore mentioned IRC Lover's Soul online.

You're right, the Kenda Flame is bitchin' and it's too bad it doesn't come with an orange & yellow carcass with black tread to give the flames some color. Maybe next time.

Check out the Rithchey Moby Bite, 2.1 tire. It's a totally slick tire, and it has "traction fins". I use one on my commuter hardtail, and it's got great grip, is high volume so it gives you a smooth ride, and is pretty cool looking if you shine it up once in a while. Check it out here:
