| Has anyone tried Panaracer's Fire FR 2.4 tires? | Finch Platte. Sep 19, 2003 5:56 AM | | There aren't any reviews for this tire here at MTBR, so...
From Panaracer's site:
b 2003 New XC Freeride & DH tire for Full Suspension Bikes
Panaracer introduces the newest member of the Fire family, the FR 2.4. Based on the same concept as the XC Pro, the FR 2.4 is made to work front and rear, and in all conditions. The Fire FR 2.4 performs as a XC Freeride tire, a light use DH tire, or anything else today's full suspension bikes can ride through.
Features:
1. The compound is the perfect combination of rubber and hardness to provide low rolling resistance and outstanding grip. All without sacrificing tread life.
2. 6 mm knobs dig in and grip everywhere.
3. Tread design has been adapted from the XC pro using both the Double Decker knob and Burning Edge design.
Weights are 860 grams for Aramid, 1020 for steel.
I've always thought Panaracer made good, long-lasting tires, so I thought I'd give these a shot. Any comments?
Thanks,

| Can you fit a 2.4 on an enduro? | phil. Sep 19, 2003 7:20 AM | | Are you looking to using the tire front and rear? To me it seems the stock 2.2 tire on the bike doesn't seem to have too much clearance is the rear triangle. The stock fork doesn't seem like it'll accept that much large either.
Have you used anything larger that the stock 2.2 tire on the rear yet? I think you're running a different fork than the stock MX comp, right? Would it fit a 2.4? |
| Good question. | Finch Q. Platte Sep 19, 2003 9:15 AM | | I've got a Tioga DH 2.3 on the rear now, a pretty plump tire. I don't see why the 2.4 wouldn't fit.
Yeah, I'm running the Marzocchi Z1 FR SL BMF fork, and it's got room for a 2.4.
Seems like the Panaracers are running a bit on the skinny side, no matter what the company says the tire is.

| What are your thoughts on the stock tires? | phil. Sep 19, 2003 11:15 AM | | I haven't played much (any) with different tires on the enduro yet, what are your thoughts about the stock tires, and other tires you have tried (what you are running now?).
The only other tire I've ridden (my old bike) were MythosXC's 2.1's. The stock enduro tires seem way bigger even though they say they are just 2.2's. I really like the ride of these tires (volume) compared to the Mythos 2.1's. I've only ridden my endure for about 2 months now and am still now as comfortable with body weight distribution for climbing as my old bike, I'm also moved to a new area so the trails are different, but it seems that I spin out easier than I used to. Again, I don't know if it's the tire, or just haven't gotten the complete feel for the enduro yet. |
| Love 'em, but... | Finch Platte. Sep 19, 2003 6:21 PM | | ...they shed knobs. You're talking about the Enduro Pro tires, right?
Knobs rip off right and left. Too bad- they handle well and absorb hits nicely on rocky terrain.

| mine are a bit wider than 2.5.... | scrublover Sep 19, 2003 12:32 PM | | they are actually larger than 2.4, and larger than the megablaster 2.5. if these are too big, you may want to give that one a try. though it has smaller nobs, and when i tried it, wore much faster than the fire fr.
love em! if you ever liked the 2.1, you'll love these. i've got the lighter version. if they fit, do it! |
| nice tires, super wide knobs | c prompt Sep 19, 2003 2:41 PM | | The 2.4 FR's are superwide, wider than any 2.4 I've run to date.
These should be considered a 2.5 or 2.6 in reality.
Chainstay clearance is not the only issue with these. You may run into chain rub problems.
Check your granny gear and largest cog in the rear combo. I had rubbing on my Dakar and others have had rubbing on their Hecklers.
The sidewalls are not as thick as the Tioga Factory DH 2.1 or 2.3 models.
Mine are newly mounted and still sitting on my bike waiting for the weekend.
The knobs are super tall and are numerous. I am going to see how much rolling resistence they pose. |
