| XT or Prodigy XC Crankset | Bmateo Sep 19, 2003 6:11 AM | | I tore the threads on my Prodigy XC Crankset the other day, so now I can't mount a pedal any more. I'm leaning toward getting an XT set for around $95, which means I'll also have to purchase a new BB, as the Prodigy is ISIS (I think). Both cranks are relatively the same price, but the Prodigy let me down once (and Raceface has just ignored my questions about it, won't even answer me), but i'd have to spend about $25 for a new BB for the shimano.
Any suggestions, reasons to go to one versus the other. |
| LX... | næstep Sep 19, 2003 6:24 AM | | The LX are the better deal.
Performance-wise, they're equivalent to the XT in terms of stiffness (<1% "flexier" than XT) and weight (~50g heavier, mainly due to ES51 BB).
You get a more durable steel granny, and you don't get the benefit of the self-extracting crank bolts, but they're durable as hell, shifting performance is on-par with XT, and mine have been quiet and zero-maintenance for the 3+ years I've owned them.

| I vote LX too | cw Sep 19, 2003 7:33 AM | | The price / performance ratio of the LX crankset is just about right IMO. |

So if I go LX, could I use the XT BB to save the weight? Price is within a couple bucks, and this is going on my HT, which is used primarily for my more XC oriented rides. Weight is not a big issue, but for only a few bucks difference it is worth asking.
This is really a HUGE help. Single income dad with beautiful mountainbiker-to-be daughter is on a tight budget and had both bikes go caput within 3 rides. The LX advice will really help!
Thanks to all who did (or will) reply.

| Nope, you're stuck with... | næstep Sep 19, 2003 9:08 AM | | ...the ES-51 (or ES-31) in the 121mm or 126mm length.
Shimano recognized the "value" of the first edition LX, and attempted to even things out by forcing the use of the longer spindle only found on the lower-level bottom brackets. Even so, it is far lighter and stiffer than any square taper setup, and beats most ISIS setups (and even the original splined XTR).
The good news is that the ES-51 is roughly comperable to the quality of the long lasting square taper UN52 series.
The 121mm ES51 is comperable to a 113mm XT/ES71 setup and will get you a conventional 47.5mm chainline. The 126mm will get you 50mm.
As long as you're not too lable conscious, the LX is the smart choice in splined cranks.

| Thanks, very imformative | Bmateo Sep 19, 2003 9:26 AM | | "As long as you're not too lable conscious, the LX is the smart choice in splined cranks. "
Actually, I fall into that trap sometimes, but your information bears out the facts, and several have confirmed the same.
I'd have more fun riding a Huffy than I would "watching" somebody else ride their full XTR-Groupo Rig...
All a long-winded way of saying thanks again for your help! |
| næstep! cool I figured it out | cw Sep 19, 2003 9:57 AM | | Now what does it mean? |
| What kind of BB do you have? Could you... | another-option4U Sep 19, 2003 7:24 AM | | go with a Truvativ product? Perhaps the Firex SL would be a way to go. I like mine more than my XT setup, and it is stiffer. Before I get flamed, let me say that your BB will have a lot to do with stiffness. The XT/es-70/71 is probably stiffer than the Firex with a lower end BB.I use a Truvativ Gigapipe and it is stiffer than my es-71/XT. Just another possibility(sp). |
| Truvativ Stylo | SWISS Sep 19, 2003 7:25 AM | | I'd recommend a Truvativ Stylo over both Sh*tmano splined or a new Prodigy. I have had gobs of trouble with Shimano splined cranks, but nary a problem with Stylos. |
| If you get truvativ cranks, you won't need a new BB. nm. | tahoskier Sep 19, 2003 7:53 AM | | |
| another vote for Stylo Teams | Loose Screw Sep 19, 2003 8:47 AM | | I've been running mine for 2 years. Lite and no problems. A buddy got a replacement XT middle ring and after 100 miles it shows more wear then mine after 1200... Shop around.. |
| Another vote for XT/LX | pimpbot Sep 19, 2003 11:54 AM | | I got XTs and they are light, stiff and cheap. Flawless apart from the soft alu granny gear I wore out, and the bolt loosening issue (fixed with red loctite).
Lots of folks say LX is pretty dang close, and can be had for cheap. I have never owned LX myself, but I believe them. |
