| Looking for a good MTB shop in the SF area | Welcome to my underground lair Sep 19, 2003 7:57 AM | | Hi all,
I am travelling to SF in November and would like to check out some good MTB shops in SF or the bay area.
Specifically looking for wheels/disc brakes.
Please let me know if you have any tips.
Thanks

| Do Not Go To "Mike's Bikes"!!! | Richard Sep 19, 2003 8:14 AM | | Arrogant, egotistical workers with serious attitudes. They don't listen to the customer.
Mike's Bikes is a chain in the Bay Area. Avoid them at all costs.
Check out "American Cyclery" in the city.
In Mill Valley go to "Mill Valley Cycle Works". |

Worth noting that the Palo Alto Mike's Bikes store is actually very good. I tend to be on a low budget when I go in for parts and/or service, and they've always been really respectful of that. I haven't bought a bike there, but when I've looked at their bikes, they've been helpful, no attitude. (And my "attitude sensors" are particularly well-honed!) |
| Kenny Ellis at Mikes Bikes in Paly is a genious! | Rumpfy Sep 20, 2003 10:15 AM | | I guess it depends on what Mikes you go to. I have a dozen shops to choose from where I live...and make the 30 minute drive to see Kenny Ellis at Mikes bikes in Palo Alto (uesd to be Wheelsmith).
He has done amazing wheel builds for me, including this one:
They were as nice as can be there.

| second that... Do Not Go To "Mike's Bikes"!!! | pimpbot Sep 19, 2003 11:49 AM | | They blow goats. I have proof!
A Bicycle Oddessey in Sausalito is a great shop, but they're pretty small. Cycleworks in Mill Valley is good too. Sunshine Bikes in Fairfax is good. Caesar's Cyclerey in San Anselmo is good. Cyclesports in Oakland, is good. I have heard good things about roaringmouse bikes in SF, but have not been there myself. |
| bad experience w/Odyssey | SFss Sep 20, 2003 3:43 PM | | but maybe that was isolated, still I won't go back. |
| Also | Mikey Sep 19, 2003 9:10 AM | | Vision Cyclery on Stanyan near the Park has highend MTB & DH stuff. |

I'll second that. I was looking at their specialized and gary fisher and they only wanted me to look at their cannondales (over $1500) and i told em to shove it! |
| if you're on a low budget, forget vision (nm) | mikeb Sep 21, 2003 9:00 AM | | buying a boatload of high end downhill gear? then your every need will be catered to.
tubes, lubes and tires? go mail order. you'll wait twenty minutes before someone talks to you.
IF YOU GO TO VSION, MAKE SURE THAT THE OWNER OF THE SHOP AND ONLY THE OWNER OF THE SHOP WORKS ON YOUR BIKE.
he's one of the best mechanics in the area. |
| Roaring Mouse Cyles or Vision Cyclery | Maxx Sep 19, 2003 10:13 AM | | RM is great for road & XC. Vision is the best for DH.
Avoid Mike's bike, anything else than Vision on Stanyan and you'll be fine. |
