Opinions: Tioga Factory DH 2.1 as trail tire(9 posts)

Opinions: Tioga Factory DH 2.1 as trail tireI hate flats

The reviews seem to be polar regarding the Tioga Factory DH 2.1 tires.

I want a reliable and less flat prone tire for my everyday riding here in dry, loose, and dusty Southern California.

My LBS recommended these tires, but from what I read here on mtbr, seems like people pinch flat these tires.

Can anyone vouch for these pupster or recommend a 2.1-2.3 tire for reliable less flat prone (puncture and pinch) for Socal riding?

I am cool with a 1000gram-ish tire.

I have been running a Tioga DH 2.3 upfront and a DH 2.1 at the rear for the last 18 months on my hardtail. Only flatted once and that was due to thorns at Moab. The tires hook up great and wear well, I have replaced my rear tire once during this time + they are CHEAP.

The only time they come off the bike is when I am racing, for that I run Maxxis Larsen TT's (2.1's) front and rear.

FWIW I run 25psi front and 28psi rear and weigh 167lbs.

I have ridden the Tioga 2.1 DH and the 2.3 DH as a rear tire for the past few years here in Southern California. It is my favorite rear tire and is an excellent front tire as well. It has excellent traction that is comparable to the Velociraptor but not as much rolling resistance. If you are serious about the 2.3 make sure it will clear the rear stays. I also used to get rocks that would wedge in the 2.3's tread and gank on the chainstay until it knocked them back out.

I weigh 265lbs, so I have to run at least 48lbs and as much as 55lbs pressure. I have never had a pinch flat with these tires. I'll keep buying them as long as I can get them, as I have not found anything I like better for trail riding in this area.

I still run a Velociraptor in front and although I have not tried any of the other ‘Raptors, it is my front tire of choice for a 2.1 tire. I think the Tioga DH / Velociraptor is a good consistent combination that work well together.

They are very, very durable. I have 1200 miles on one and its finally in retirement on the kid hauler and with the center knob down to near the bottom this tire is wide and great on the sand as a rear. Tire is HEAVY and rides OK unless it gets loose and deep then its a PITA. On rock its great, very durable rubber and sidewalls you would have trouble cutting with a knive. Recommended as a rear if you don't ride any sand. As a front tire its got no tracking and was killing my shoulder trying to keep it online. Best go with a more stable directional tread like WTB mutano 2.4/2.24 or...

you bet!

sticky, grippy, and great for socal. Im actually about to throw a set (2.3 front, 2.1 rear) on my single speed, just because these tires work so well here.

im not the most agressive rider, and I weigh about 190, so I run these at about 35-40 psi, and all is good. no pinch flats here!

just dont turn into a weight weenie- these things aint light!

I run the Tioga Factory DH 2.3 when I'm "going heavy" and it works well -- but it weighs a ton. I've had incredibly good luck with your basic Fire XC Pro 2.1s for everyday riding -- I go about 210 and run them over the rocks at 40 psi with no pinchies. Highly recommended.

I believe that most of the folks who pinch-flat the Tioga DH Pro are folks running them as true DH tires on rocky terrain. Just one look and feel gives one enough info to know they can't hang with a Nokian, Intense, Maxxis, Michelin, etc true DH Tire.

I run the 2.1 R and 2.3 F Tioga DH Pro on my hardtail. I live in Missoula, Montana in the Rocky Mtns, and find they work VERY well here. Best climbing tire I've ridden, for sure, and they corner surefootedly.
Thx for all the feedback. I picked up a set of 2.1i hate flats

Thanks everyone for the advice.

I picked up a set and the difference over my stock Mosquito tires is like nite and day.

I am taking my Dakar to Big Bear tomorrow with the Factory DH 2.1 tires.

Big Bear was so loose, sandy and rocky today.

The Tioga Factory DH 2.1 did just fine.

No complaints. A great tire for SoCal.
