| What causes your chain to stick to the chainrings? | Aaron Oct 20, 2003 3:39 PM | | hey all,
I recently bought a new chain and it has been a bit sticky on the rings. When i torque hard the chain will stick to the middle cog instead of disengaging and moving to the derailler. The cassette is also skipping but that is because it is worn. I plan on buying a new cassette later today.
Im guessing that the sticky problem is due to a worn chainring. Correct? |
| Yes, it is worn. If your ring is aluminum, you... | Beau Oct 20, 2003 4:14 PM | | might be able to just ride it for a bit, and the new chain will wear out the ring until it fits. If it is really bad though, you will have to replace your ring. |
| It's called "chainsuck" | fattirewilly Oct 20, 2003 4:14 PM | | and the worn chainring or new chain is the problem. Since everything is worn and you've only replaced the chain, you could put the old chain back on.
It's also happened to me using a dry lube in wet conditions.
There are two schools of thought on chain replacement:
1. Never replace the chain and replace everything at once, like when your chain finally brakes.
2. Replace chain when it stretches. A cheap way to measure is with a 12 inch ruler. The pins on a new chain will be right on the start and end of 12 inches. Any more than 1/16 to 1/8 inch extra and its time to replace.
I can go through 2 or 3 chains like this before it's drivetrain time. So I'm saving one of those partially worn/stretched chains to give everything a final thrashing before its replaced. |
| You could try some JB Weld... | næstep Oct 20, 2003 4:17 PM | | Yeah, it's generally worn chainring teeth, especially on certain aluminum rings. Dirt & crud and stuff can also play a big factor. Wouldn't be a bad idea to check the chain out and replace it, too usually if it's skipping on the cassette, it's past its time.
