In Home bicycle Security.....Mr Blur
Oct 20, 2003 6:59 PM
How does one secure a Santa Cruz Blur against thieves? I don't have anything to loop a chain lock with? I really need suggestions here, and thanks in advance. P.S. I really live in the worst place one could ever live in. Espicially w/ a Santa Cruz Blur...

I don't know about you guys but my bike comes inside with me. I won't take the chance of leaving it outside. I'm just short of giving it a pillow and blanket at night!

or whatever the cheap department store brand of bicycles is where you live.
Also, numerous U locks.
Nothing to lock to? How about the gas or water meter. Set a post in the ground with one bag of cement. Doesnt need to be big, like a one and a half inch rigid galvanized pipe should be enough, then drill a hole, or epoxy a T on the top.
Why can't you just bring it in with you?

Of course, if someone _really_ wants your bike, they'll find a way to get it. If nothing else, make sure your renters insurance is up to date. And keep documents on the value of your bike and make sure you have the serial number recorded.

So it makes it almost impossible to remove the bike from the closet. Even unlocking my locks, it's still hard to get my bike out of the closet, and that's while being calm, never mind during a B&E

that you are worried that thieves will break into your place and steal your bike? Aren't you worried about the rest of your stuff?

OK, here's my idea: buy the biggest, heaviest, most beat up old cruiser bike you can find. Hopefully it weighs at least 75 lbs. Add a rack and bolt on some scrap iron if you need to. Bring it into your livingroom and U-lock it to your Blur. Moving that mess will be such a headache that nobody will touch it. Park the cruiser outside when you are home and need the space. Plus you can ride the cruiser when the weather is bad, or you just need to go to the corner store.

If you have any Olympic sized weight training plates, put a NY lock through a bunch of those...preferably the 45 lbs. Should make for a difficult getaway.
