Cloud Nine setup on an Ellsworth Truth(5 posts)

Cloud Nine setup on an Ellsworth Truthmtbrice
Oct 21, 2003 7:47 AM
I just replaced my Fox shock with Cloud Nine shock and I'm having problems setting it up with my '02 Truth. I'm a 185lbs rider and ride aggressive XC. I've set it up with the recommended 10psi under my body weight and the bike feels a little more sluggish now than with the Fox Float that was on it. I run a Fox Vanilla on the front set at the 100mm setting....any input on setup would be appreciated!!!

thanks, Jeff

Hate to say it since you just bought it, but you should be running a coil on the rear especially since your running a coil front shock. I replaced the Fox float on my Truth w/ a Romic and it made a huge diff.(I weigh 195). The Romic provides more traction and handles big hits better plus you get the stable platform valving which makes the bike a better pedaler. It will add a pound over the air shock, but well worth it!

I have an AD-12 on my 03 Truth. I weigh 160 lbs and run 200 psi in the shock. At the recommended psi it is way to "plush", more like an old heavy Cadillac running down a gravel road. Really smooth over rough stuff, but really sluggish under power. You could try running higher pressure. My AD-12 is rated for 300 psi, I think the Cloud Nine should be rated for the same. Try it with about 230-250 psi. A romic coil would be the ultimate solution to your problem, but at a price. The shock with Ti spring kit is about $500 from Ellsworth, less on eBay or the classifieds if you can find it.
Recommended pressure is a starting point....Monte

sag is what it's all about. Pump the shock up until you get about 3/8" of sag. That's 25% sag for the 1.5" stroke shock. See what the ride feels like after you do that. Though a coil might have been a better choice, but you're only 25 lbs heavier than me on my '02 truth with a Cloud 9.

I like it for what it is. Typically I run the shock about the same pressure as my riding weight is. I weigh 190 typically run the shock at about 210. Dials set middle to upper end of the road with compression. Reboud about 1/2 way in. Currently I have a fox rl 100 on the front. I believe it makes for a great ruggest cross country trial bike. Of course there are plenty of 3-5 foot drops that test the frame. 3 years, so far so good.
