tire for loose, steep climbs?(10 posts)

tire for loose, steep climbs?dcaruso
Oct 21, 2003 8:20 AM
I do mostly xc riding but I come across occasional steep climbs that are loose and rocky and I just can't resist trying. I say 'trying' because my rear tire (Bontrager Jones) just doesn't seem to hold on very well. I'm looking for tire suggestions.

Thanks!

2.3, 30-35psi. Its great for roots, rocks, mud, loamy soil..but gets a bit skittery on hard pack. I run mine " front" direction sacrificing a little traction for easier rolling....

If by "loose" you mean gravel / small rocks + dirt / small rocks + sand, or just loose dirt, the Conti Survival Pro is a really good choice for a rear tire. It isn't quite as good for wet + muddy though (if you live anywhere other than the Pacific Northwest or BC, you can ignore that last bit).

Pure climbing ability on loose steep climbs?

Velociraptor

Mount it so that when you look down onto the top of the back tire from behind the bike that the "chevron" style middle lug is oriented like this: V

Clip in and grind away!
yes, V -Raptor rear is good for loose dry, but...cw

Not so good when wet - especially wet wood. This is usually the time of year I take mine off. Depends on where you live/ride.

Panaracer Smoke Classic 2.1 at 30-35 PSI.
An oldie, but a goodiecw

Yeah, the Smoke is a good tire for pure traction. Even when clogged with several pounds of mud (not a geat clear-er), it still seems to get a bite on the ground.

If you don't mind high rolling resistance, don't ride a lot of mud, and don't want more volume, it's tough to beat the Smoke IMHO.
Another vote for a true classic, the Panaracer Smoke.Spain

I've been using the Smoke/Dart combo for the past couple of years and have been very pleased with them. As others have said, not the greatest tire in terms of rolling resistance or mud clearance, but in dry, rocky terrain, these Smokes ... smoke. They're also pretty inexpensive. The WTB Velociraptors are good as well. The tread pattern is very similar to that of the Smoke/Dart.

I have some 1.85, and they are bigger than you would think.

they are a bit heavy (~600g), and roll somewhat slow, but they climb very well. I run them at 30 psi.
