| POLL: What pedal are you using? | surfinguru Oct 21, 2003 8:41 AM | | I'm currently running the Shimano 520's and am looking for something else. Curious to know what everyone else here uses.
FWIW, I live in Santa Cruz and ride Wilder, DeLaveaga, Niseine Marks quite abit and any other technical single track I can get. |

| Model Specific.... | surfinguru Oct 21, 2003 8:56 AM | | Metroid, thanks for the link there. Looks like Shimano is the significant leader. However, SPD is pretty generic. (I counted 7 SPD models on their web site....)
With the CrankBro's release of the Candy's and Time's announcement of the new XC's, I was hoping for a more "model" specific answer.
Thanks again! |

| re: POLL: What pedal are you using? | Pitbull Oct 21, 2003 9:53 AM | | surfinguru,
I am currently using the Time Atac carbons. They are a good pedal, but I did prefer the shimano 747 pedals (I am not a shimano person). Ritchey pedals I recommend (at least the earlier ones). I will not use the eggbeater again (ever). Right now everything is Time, for me it is easier using one pair of shoes. I would opt for the 959 by shimano, but four sets of pedals are not in the budget. I have to stress again ......... Eggbeaters Suck !!! |
| Why eggbeater sucks? | gn Oct 21, 2003 12:23 PM | | Why do you say eggbeater sucks? How about some reason? (I'd like to know). What kind of riding do you do? Thanks. |
| Why eggbeater sucks? | Pitbull Oct 21, 2003 6:37 PM | | I've used the eggbeaters for a season. I wanted to like the pedal, I thought they would be my favorite pedal. The first problem I encountered was "hot foot" I am told this depends on your shoe quality, so I did try other shoes (shim320, Sidi Dominator) and from what I understand are some of the best offerings, but "hot foot" never left. The cleats worn out inside of a month (I rode daily for at least a couple of hours at a time). When I needed to run down to local quicky mart walking shoes didn't stay on pedal, I agree this may not be a big thing, but if bike your only transportation it is everything at times. The straw that broke the camel's back is when the spindles bent ....... this maybe an isolated situation, but my spindles bent. The mud clearance was great, but in the deserts of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Lower Colorado mud is not a big issue. These pedals also seemed to get hung up on rocks (they grabbed more from underneath) than the ritchies, Shimanos, and time pedals I was so use to. I also weigh in at 230 pounds ..... I trash bottom brackets regularly, so when the spindles bent I didn't bother, I stuck with what worked ...... and it wasn't the eggbeaters. |

+ super-light
+ easy entry & exit (easier than the TIME ATACs I used previously)
+ easy rebuild
- occasional hotspot on the ball of my right foot
- they need to be rebuilt each year for $15, when TIME and Shimano need no maintenance. |

| until my ATAC XS's get here, I'm using Time Aliums | DudeOnABike Oct 21, 2003 2:52 PM | | But have been using eggbeaters until recently. Glad to get rid of those things. The Aliums are great pedals, but they are quite heavy. So they're holding me off until I get my new Time pedals.

| Shimano M545s | pimpbot Oct 21, 2003 11:14 PM | | They're pretty cool, but heavy, and get clogged with mud easily. I may switch pedals for winter fun times.
It's prolly a bad habbit, but I like that I can clip out of them for technical stuff and still stay on the pedals. |
| Time Atac Carbons | uofabill Oct 22, 2003 8:12 AM | | I tried various SPD type and had problems with the little plate screws coming loose and falling out. Also no good in mud.
Tried Egg Beaters and wanted to like them but never could get out of them as easy as the Times also they will release inadvertantly if you do hit the bottom on a rock. Hot spots were a problem too. I a die hard Time desciple now. |
