Oct 21, 2003 9:00 AM | | I need some help deciding what travel case to purchase. I will have to mail order so I will not be able to check out the fit and quality in person. I will be transporting full suspension mountian bikes 5" travel front and rear with disk brakes,size xs and a med. Room for helments and gear would be nice but not necessary, bike protection is more important. Any recommendations would be helpful and appreciated. thanks in advance!

The Trico is the most commmon as far as I've seen, and works very well. Several companies make imitations. Performance is good, but I didn't like it as well as the Trico - has a hard plastic separator sheet instead of foam that didn't seem to stabilize smaller parts as well as the foam sheet that others use. The chamfered corners cut down on space for no reason, IMHO.
PedalPack makes a very nice (and expensive) hardshell case with the most convenient casters I've ever used. I've used their compact case that lets me fit a small FS frame by removing or partially disassembling the rear triangle - not likely to fit a medium frame, though.
Do a search on "bike travel cases" on the web. You'll turn up several manufacturers. You can compare features, cost, size and weight. Some cases are sized for UPS shipping, and others are too big. Personally, I'd get a UPS-able case, since sometimes air travel with the bike isn't convenient. If you see a "TC-1" case, I'd steer clear. I actually bought one from Supergo a couple years ago and it lasted for 3 trips in one year before the flimsy latches were failing and one of the casters got shoved through the thin shell. To their credit, Supergo gave me a complete refund, no questions asked.
