Does anybody know what happened to Tange? Is Prestige still made? I have vermin to kill and aluminum makes a crappy blade!

This years models use 853 but Tange was used last year and they may have some frames left... Most steel builders seem to use Reynolds 853 or True Temper OX Platinum these days.

Last year's Interloc (IRD) road/mountain/cross frames were made of "New Prestige"... http://interlocracing.com/steelframes02.html

Not Japanese but also check out Soma and Kogswell. Kogswell is having an open discussion about introducing a lugged steel mountain bike frame - check their message board.

I was wondering the same thing a few months ago, and after a bit of digging, it looks like Tange is gone. They filed for bankruptcy in 2002, and it looks like they have not re-emerged. Now, it appears that there are no more Japanese tube makers for bikes, Ishiwata died during the early 90's. Fortunately, you still got a few options concerning buying bikes made from Japanese pipes. As I understand it, some custom makers still have some Prestige lying around and can probably build you a real trick bike, though at a premium so you better be hurting bad. You could also just buy a used frame that's made out of Prestige, old Rocky Mountains, Stumpjumpers, etc. Or you could scour for a new frame. Harder, but not impossible. Interloc has already been mentioned, though fewer people know that Brodie made frames from Prestige cromo up till 2002. Call them up to see what they got, you pay in CDN so exchange is favourable.

they use True Temper tubes even though their Atlantis touring bikes are hand-made in Osaka, Japan. See:http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/atlantis.html#design
