| 2004 XT Crank/BB | Zerotrek Oct 21, 2003 1:55 PM | | I have a 2004 Shimano XT Hollowtech II crank that I just bought. You know the kind that is attached to the BB spindle like last years XTR.
I cannot find anywhere what parts need lubrication, specifically in the BB area. Anyone have a clue. Shimano website did not seem very helpful. |
| grease and torque everything... | glenzx Oct 22, 2003 9:50 AM | | Having played with a couple of pairs of the new xtr cranks w/integrated spindle, I'd recommend greasing almost all the parts, including the pinch bolts, threads on BB cups, splines and all. The only thing that does not look like it needs lube is the plastic non-drive side arm retainer/compression "nut" that you thread on snugly to set bearing pre-load before clamping down the pinch bolts.
I highly recommend checking and re-checking all the parts the first few weeks of riding, as two of the three sets of XTR cranks I worked on had slop in the BB's. These were on pretty damned hardcore pro level riders' bikes though..... but I believe it's worth it! Especially after the first few rides. Might not hurt to order a spare set of cups/bearings for the ineveitable future play. |
