Giant warranty question........(8 posts)

Giant warranty question........VAnrs2
Oct 21, 2003 3:49 PM
As most giant NRS owners I have spoken to have noticed the rear shock mounts develop play in them after only a short period of time. I took my bike to teh local giant dealer, since i moved and cannot take it to the LBS I bought the bike from, and had the part ordered under warranty. I went in today to pick up the parts, which they never called to tell me they were in, and they would not give them to me to install. There reasoning was it has to be installed by a licensed Giant dealer. It is only some bushings and I have the torque specs anda torque wrench so installing them would not be a problem. Do they have a right to charge me to put them in? In talking with some other people, one of whom owns a bike shop, it seems as they should not charge me for labor. Unfortunately the bike shop I frequent does not carry giant so I am kind of stuck with this one dealer. Now if they try and charge me do I have a right to ask for my parts and go to another dealer? Sorry to be so long winded but this bike shop is a joke and I am kinda of ticked off at the moment but I would like some input before I take my bike in tomorrow. Thanks

Jason

... it does sound like they might charge you since they are not a giant dealer. My bike had developed the same problem and my lbs got the new bushings. They switched the bushings with no charge because it was under warranty. But then again the lbs I took my bike to was where I bought it from. I agree with you, though , its only two bushings and it doesnt take long to install them. Oh yeah and one more thing to look out for, as soon as I got my bushings and I went out for a ride the play came back. I dont know if my lbs had replaced the bushings but I had to take it back and after 3 or 4 times they finally got it solved. They sent the whole shock back to rock shox and they sent back a totally new shock (with new bushings). Right now there is no play and I hope it does not ever come back. Anyways, if you can find an LBS that carries giant bikes and they should take care of you. This is just my opinion and I hope your bike gets fixed!!!

I'm confused, are they a Giant dealer or not. If they aren't, then sure they can charge you labor unless Giant will pay them for their work. On the other hand, they wouldn't be licensed and you should be able to take your parts and walk - at the risk of voiding your warranty by doing the work yourself.
If they are a Giant dealer then they should have put the parts on when they came in, called you, and smiled when you came in to pick up the bike!
If all else fails, give Giant a call yourself. It sure sounds like you've had your share of pain!

The bike shop that I took it to is a Giant Dealer. Sorry I was not totally clear on that point. I just wish that the bike shop that I go to all the time was....they are atrek and fisher dealer. They told me I should just sell my giant and get a sugar.........lol :) :)

Got it! And I can understand why you go somewhere else for other work!
I agree with what the others you talked to said: Giant should pick up the check. Especially if they are telling you who can do the work.
By the way, what tipped you off on the bushings?

Cool thanks for the info guys. As far as tipping me off on the bushings it is pretty noticable and when you lift the seat you can hear the clicking. I also had the bike shop I like (not a giant dealer) take a look at it for me. Thanks I will let you know how it goes
