phantom shifting and a broken cable(5 posts)

phantom shifting and a broken cableinnergel

I was out on Saturday taking my new Stumpjumper for it's inaugural ride and I noticed a couple of things that have me a bit concerned.

1. On a few of the climbs, it felt and sounded like the rear derailler was shifting to an easier gear on it's own when it was under load. When the climb was finished, the bike seemed to shift back into the gear it was in previously. It's possible that I could have somehow been hitting the shift lever on accident, but I am sure I was not shifting it back. It sounds like a cable tension problem, but it's hard to tell. Any other possible causes I should look at?

2. After one particularly muddy stretch of the ride, I heard some "buzzing" coming from the back tire. I figured is was just a small stem rubbing the tire because once the mud was shed, the buzzing stopped. When I was cleaning the bike afterwards, I noticed that the front derailler cable was broken off right at the point where it connects. Will this broken cable cause me any problems or should I just get it replaced? I don't want my front derailler to go haywire in the middle of nowhere. Since it's a new bike, it should be under warranty.

Now I am predominately a roadie, so my mtb experiences are very limited, so any help is appreciated.

Nothing to get too worried about- the "ghost shifting" is not uncommon on a new bike as the cables and housings settle in- the bike shop where you purchased it should have offered a free tune-up/adjustment visit after you put a few miles on it to take care of the shifting concerns.

The broken front duerailer cable will not cause any immediate problems, but should be replaced. Without some cable protruding above the duerailer bolt it will be next to impossible to reattach the cable should it become disconnected.

The probable cause for the phantom shifting is related to tension on the cables, too much or too little will cause it.

As the others said, take it to were you bought it. Almost all LBSs give you free tune-ups with the purchase.

I would recommend replacing the front der cable just in case, this will give you some peace of mind.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Glad to know it's just something minor like cable tension. I never experienced this on my road bike, so i was a bit concerned.

My LBS gives you 1 year of free tune ups with a new bike purchase. So they'll take care of me. They know me pretty well from my road bike.
