Generally, the number given is the length in inches from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat tube (referred to as center-top). Some however, give the length from the center of the b/b to the center of the junction of the seat tube and top tube. Others dispense with the numbers altogether and have XS, S, M, L, and XL.
Probably the most important dimension of a bike as it relates to fit is the "effective" (horizontal) length of of the top tube, yet this number is never used to describe frame size.
As for FS vs. hardtail, the sizing is similar i.e. it's not like a road vs. mt bike where you would use different sizes for each.

| By test riding it. If it fits, that's the right size. | pimpbot Nov 25, 2003 8:48 PM | | There are no standards for how mt bikes are measured. I ride a 19.5" Giant Yukon hardtail and a 16" K2 Razorback full gushy, and apart from standover height (which is not that important as long as you have enough) they are the same size. I've tried out a Giant NRS and the 18" fit me best, but the 17" Jamis Dakar fit me as well.
Go to your LBS to size every bike you think you may like/can afford/fits your needs and go from there. |
