| klein air headset vs integrated & durablility questions | steve3 Nov 25, 2003 8:22 PM | | what's the difference between klein's old integrated headset and the integrated stuff many manufacturers are using today?
I remember the Klein's had a 50/50 shot, as far as the adjustment goes, as well as needing it's own steer tube diameter, if I'm not mistaken. Klein no longer uses these, I believe.
Also, the Chris King Site states in detail how bad the IS headsets are. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this? |
| Boils down to pressed-in vs. machined-in cups; internal vs. interal | næstep Nov 26, 2003 6:56 AM | | The internal headsets are really just modified versions of a traditional threadless headset. These have replacable pressed-in cups and are also referred to as Zero Stack or semi-integrated headsets.
The truly integrated headsets have the cups machined in to the head tube, i.e. not replacable, and that could be a problem if manufacturing tolerances are sloppy or maintenance is ignored. These are the IS headsets.
The King rant applies to the IS headsets, and goes so far as distinguish the ZS/Internal headsets as being a superior design to the IS standard.
Unfortunately there is a lot of confusion because "Internal" and "Integrated" are interchanged loosely and the bike companies who practice this seem oblivious to the anti-Internal sentiment.
