which non-ust and non-conti tires????(13 posts)

which non-ust and non-conti tires????thejuru
Nov 25, 2003 10:45 PM
Let me start by saying that my favorite tire I have ever tried was the continental vertical pro's....unfortunately they do not mix with stan's sealant and both blew up on me. I would love to find a tire with that kind of grip at a reasonable weight, therefore probably something non-ust but will be mounted on mavic x3.1 tubeless rim with stan's sealant. I like to run low psi and really have not noticed any advantage of using tubeless tires rather than reg tires with sealant. Any suggestions???
Thanks in advance!

I have ALWAYS used velocoraptors and had no problems with the stan's or side walls tearing or flats or blowing up or traction or.....in other wordsI recommment them.

to using UST tires. They don't blow up.

Some have had great success running standard sealed tires. I didn't. For a year I dealt with repetitive tears, leaks, blow outs, etc. using Stan's sealant on standard tires. I tried sealing various tires from Hutchinson, Michelin, Continental & Panaracer and all eventually succumbed to the same fate. Funny...the Verts held up much better than anything else I tried.
I finally bit the bullet and began using dedicated UST tires and have had superb results. I have not had a tear, blow-out, flat or any other mechanical problem for close to two years. I throw in a bit of Stan's goop for extra puncture protection and to prevent slow leak which some USt users report.

Sure they're a bit heavier & bit more expensive, but it's definitely a more secure system.

So, my recommendation is to get UST Verticals if you like the standard Verticals. Personally, it's my favorite tire, particularly up front, and my 1.5 year old UST Vert is still in good shape.

Squeak, are the sidewall of UST tires more robust...?Mario

Do they protect the rim a little more than a regular tire with sealant? I would assume so and this is one of my fear of running low pressure. I've just ordered myself a pair of xmass XL and I was planning on running UST tires because when you are low pressure, you always find a way to ram a rock from an angle and bang you rim. If UST tires are more heavy, they must be thicker and in a sense will protect the rim a little more... What do you think?

Have you tried the Hutchinson Spider 2.3 UST? I'm also a Conti Vert lover but I'm tempted to try the Spider for my UST tire...

Thanks.

Yes, the UST version has a thicker, stiffer sidewall. I'm able to safely run 26-30 PSI through technical rocky northeast terrain and have never bottomed the rim.
When I first started using Stan's on conventional rims I banged the hell out of a brand new Velocity VXC running around 32 psi.

Haven't tried the Spider. It hasn't been released in the US yet. It's touted as a mud tire and bears a resemblance to the Hutch Gator which is a great mud tire. I'm doubtful though that it would rival the Vertical on dry terrain.

are the Maxxis Mobster and the High roller. I have never tried Stan's with them but as far as traction, braking and ride quality go they rock. Maxxis makes them in sizes from 1.9 to 2.7 in many different compounds and sidewalls configurations. If you ride where the trails are not packed down like pavement or it is often damp the Swampthing is a great tire.

I use either 2 Mobsters, Mobster front and High Roller rear. Soon adding a Swampthing to my collection.

have been bulletproof for me.I have been using them on a set of UST Bontrager wheels with Stan's in them. 600 miles and no problems at all.

Traction is good with the 2.1 and the price can't be beat as I paid $25 for front and back.

UST Conti's worked fine on my X3.1's w/Stans...glenzx

... but the non-UST versions detonated off the rim. (I posted that info previously...) I had pretty good luck and long life in MutanoRaptors on X223's with Stans, but when I went to the 3.1's, Stans and the MutanoRaptors.....it didn't work out so well. The front tire kinda "burbed" leaking enough air out to make it squirmy, which made it "burp" more. Of course this was during a race, so I kept trying to ride it out, then stopped, put some air in and kept trying, but to no avail. I had to stop and throw a tube in then continue! Argh. It was my first race so I was kinda bummed, but I did learn a few valuable lessons: CO2+good, and 3.1's with non-UST tires=Bad. Of course it didn't stop me from trying to run non-UST conti's on those rims and that tire blew up in a race too! Some lessons are a tough 'learn' for me ;-)
agree with others on UST tiresFM or MF

You already have the rims, get the tires and use stans and you will never have issues again. I've run both the UST vert pro 2.3's and geaxx sturdy UST 2.3's with great luck. I tried the conti explorer pro UST 2.1's but they didn't hold up well to rocks, roots, drops and jumps.

trying to save weight by running non-ust tires is only going to cause flats and wrecked tires, if you ride technical terrain or do any jumps/drops where the sidewall takes more abuse. Thats been my experience and I've tried just about every combination of stans products and legit UST.
FM or MF, so stan's works with UST conti's???nm Thanks everybodythejuru

I'm running x3.1's and stans goop on two bikes, one with a vert pro UST 2.3 and the other with a geax sturdy UST 2.3. Went the whole summer without a flat, despite riding whistler trails a lot, hitting the shore, and XC clim&drop type rides 2x a week or so.

My front wheel is a Velocity VXC with Stan's strip and my rear is a dedicated UST X3.1. Both work equally well with UST tires.

I ran conti vert pro 2.3s with stans on mavic x317 with zero problems. In fact, they were the easiest for my to seat on the bead. Right now I have an intense up front and an explorer pro 2.1 in the back- both with notubes.
