| What tire do you use with Stan's | Trebor Strebor Nov 26, 2003 8:21 AM | | I'm trying Stans and currently run Fire XC Pro. Someone has informed me that Panaracers don't work well with the notubes setup.
What have you had success with?
Thanks! |

| re: What tire do you use with Stan's | ride1 Nov 26, 2003 1:39 PM | | I run Maxxis 2.1 mobby up front and a 1.9 larsen TT on rear on Mavic 517 rims. works great!
set up is everything.
watch the short movie on stans site for the tips and tricks and take your time.
soap and water helps with setup. |
| Stan recommends against Panaracer Michelin WTB | Terry Nov 26, 2003 4:16 PM | | I had a perfectly good Michelin Comp S blow off rim while parked in the garage! |
| WTB? Now you tell me. | Tscheezy Nov 26, 2003 11:03 PM | | Stan was answering Qs on the weight weenies board a while back and I mentioned to him about my Weirwolf burping. I guess he decided WTB was out of the running later because he didn't say I should not use that. That starts cutting down on the officially sanctioned list a bit now doesn't it? I can't believe Conti isn't on the list. Stan's seems to dissolve them like rice paper.

| Here's my list | IJR Nov 26, 2003 6:43 PM | | Starting with Fire XC's 2.1 used those for over a year no problems at all.
Trailblasters 2.1 only got two rides blew both F & R tires off the rims on a really small jump. They had a noticably looser beads than the Fires. I sent them back to panaracer and got more fires.
Intense 909's 2.35 work
WTB mutano raptors 2.35 work
WTB moto raptor 2.35 didn't work, they would burp on medium size jumps & drops
WTB weirwolfs 2.5 work
Panaracer FR 2.4 work
from my experience for non UST tires if you can put the tire on by hand it probably will not work. The bead has to be tight or it will either burp or blow completely off. |

i needed.
DIY tubeless is not worth the trouble IMO.

Why would you make a blanket statement like that and not qualify it in some way? If you really think that's true it just shows what little first hand knowledge you actually have about bike tires in general.
Try putting on any number of wire bead tires without tools there bubba. Not only will you need tools you'll need metal tools because the plastic ones bend over or break.
Here's my list of tires I tried that won't go on either my D 3.1's or D 321's without using metal levers.
Intense 909's
Maxxis minion
Maxxis Mobster
Nokian Gazzalodi
Panaracer FR |
| Wow. You really pegged Shiggy... | Matno Nov 28, 2003 6:11 AM | | No firsthand knowledge of tires whatsoever...
;^)
BTW, I think it depends more on technique and hand strength. I've had plenty of tires that I couldn't mount by hand, but I have friends who could mount the same ones for me by hand relatively easily. If you have done it a lot, levers are rarely, if ever, needed. I'm getting better. (I could always mount my Panaracers by hand, and in my experience, wire vs Kevlar is not a determining factor as to how hard tires are to mount). |
| I think you've got it | IJR Nov 28, 2003 8:55 AM | | shiggy doesn't actually mount any of his own tires hence no need for tools. Great observation!!
There's a guy that rides with us every once in awhile that is the same way. He doesn't carry any tools at all just water and he readliy admits that he wouldn't know what to do with them if he had them so why carry the extra weight.
Joking aside.... Your post is proof that Shiggy should have qualified his statement. Shiggy didn't say that HE was the only one that never needs tools to mount tires.
You need tools to mount some of your tires. I need tools to mount my tires and I've got a pair of wire bead Intense tires that I don't think Shiggy could mount on my D321's without tools either. |
