| Are the WTB Epic Wolf tires any good for every day tires... | Ducky Nov 26, 2003 10:42 AM | | not for aggresive riding.
Thanks. |
| What do you ride everyday? | jw25 Nov 26, 2003 11:29 AM | | I think they'd be overkill for commuting-type riding, but as an all-purpose XC tire, they're good. Excellent if you aren't too big, less so if you're over 160 or so.
I weigh 150 lbs dressed to ride, for reference. I've run the purple-stripe folding version on hardpack, logs, mud, and rock, and had no problems. They shed well, considering how many tread bloks and how close they are. Wear seems good, too. After a couple hundred miles, including some pavement (I ride to the trails), the rear is barely worn.
I like them as a rear tire, but for most trails here in PA, I want a larger front tire. A Hutchinson Mosquito 2.0 went great with an Epicwolf rear, and handled everything well.
I ran the rear at 38-40 psi, and had no flats. Up front, I dropped it a few pounds, but never lower than 36 psi - they're skinny and supple, so they need some pressure to keep their shape on bigger hits. |
| Rocky, hardpack... | Ducky Nov 26, 2003 12:33 PM | | I live in Southern Utah and ride between 10 to 15 miles a ride. The terrain here is mostly hard pack and rocky. It the trail goes through a wash it get sandy. I weight 195 low side but with camel back probable close to 200 lb. I am not an aggrasive trail rider, (no jumping etc..) but like races and long rides. |
| Rocky, hardpack... | Graw Nov 26, 2003 12:51 PM | | For your conditions, I would shy away from the Epicwolf. If you're going with WTB, I would probably use the smaller Mutanoraptor, 2.24. Other good choices would be a Geax Sodona 2.25, Hutchinson Python 2.0 or a Schwalbe Racing Ralph 2.25. |

| New EpicWolf 2.1 available | Bikerdude Nov 26, 2003 1:07 PM | | WTB has the Epicwolf available in a 2.1 as well as the 1.95. The 2.1 version should be a great tire for the conditions you described. |
| New EpicWolf 2.1 available | Graw Nov 26, 2003 1:33 PM | | Good call, I didn't know they had a 2.1. That would be better, but I think I might still lean towards a 2.2ish tire, but thats sort of splitting hairs, so you could just go with the tread pattern you like most. |
