Can I use Flak Jacket brake housing for derailleurs? x-post(5 posts)

Can I use Flak Jacket brake housing for derailleurs? x-postbob

Sorry for the x-post but I'd like to get this done tonight.

I'm building up a new Heckler and while I have plenty of Flak Jacket brake cable housing I am short of shifter housing. Any reason I can't run the brake housing for shifting? For what it's worth the Flak Jacket brake housing I have has paralell bundled wires...not the spiral wrap.

Yes you can but remember that the internal diameter of the brake housing is bigger. This will allow dirt and stuff to get in and affect your shifting to some extent.

Also the shifter cable is different to brake cable, the ends of the brake cables are bigger and will not fit on the shifter.
It's the same diameter with FJ housing. nmfonseca

I've tried it - didn't work very well so I went out and bought derailler housing and was happier.
Yes but you didn't use FJ housing did you?fonseca

Like I said above, Flack Jacket brake and derailleur housing is the exact same diameter. The two are 100% identical! Both are 5mm in diameter. FJ housing is the same as QBP and Jagwire "carbon fiber" kevlar weave housing. QBP even lists these housings under "Brake or Derailleur Housing".
