is there a certain length the stem should be? i was told that you shouldn't be able to see your front axle. please help

because if you can see your axle your weight may be so far forward that it might have a tendency in certain situations to unweight your rear wheel and make it easier to go over the handlebars.

Still the stem can be any length that feels right for you. If your lower body happens to weigh a lot more than some folks a long stem may be just what the doctor ordered because you have long arms. With the heavier than average lower body seeing the front stem may not be a disadvantage for you.

I have a 90mm stem that works for me. A friend uses a 120mm stem. So a stem can compensate for you, a shorter top tube, a seat put far forward, a seat placed further back, a long top tube, short arms, long torso, etc, etc, etc. There is no standard length stem. It's up to you to get one that suits you.
