| Headset suggestions other than King? | Smytty Nov 27, 2003 11:50 AM | | I'm shopping around for a new 1 1/8 threadless for my Sugar+. I'd love to get a Chris King, but I just can't afford it (~$180 Canadian, once you include taxes, shipping, etc). The wife is already watching me like a hawk when it comes to buying bike stuff.
Sooo, I'm looking for something that will be reasonably strong, light, durable - you know, best bang for the buck.
BTW, I'm 205 lbs, and ride XC, if it really makes any difference. |
| The Cane Creek S2 is a decent headset. Try looking... | Damion Nov 27, 2003 12:13 PM | | at RaceFace's headsets, also. Decent for the money. First, try selling the wife on King's warranty. 10 years on the headset. That is how I got my CK wheelset. Good Luck. |
| Look for FSA Orbit XLII... | næstep Nov 27, 2003 12:45 PM | | Usually you can find them for a very reasonable price. The guys are FSA are top-notch in the customer service department. I've got three Oribt headsets on my various bikes and they've all been flawless.

| 2nd that... | Brace1 Nov 27, 2003 3:26 PM | | Got one on my fully and it's awesome. I've seen them as low as $20 online too. |
| FSA Pig- 20$, sealed-40 or so, the best headset I've ever had! | Lucky13 Nov 27, 2003 9:39 PM | | Takes dh/dj/street beating like nothing else! I use nothing but Pig. |
| Saw those for $19 recently, blue only | tl1 Nov 28, 2003 7:36 AM | | I have one too and it's taken a lot of hard use in my Surly Instigator w/ no problems. I wouldn't use that star-fangled nut replacement thingie that comes with it though. It looked way too dodgy to me and my LBS mechanic also advised against it. It's also heavier than a star-fangled nut.

| Cane Creek S2 | Kapusta Nov 27, 2003 10:48 PM | | I've had one on my superlight for 2 years and it is still smooth as silk. Maintenance free. If you look around you can get them for around $40 (us). |
| Cane Creek S-5/6 or RaceFace | DiRt DeViL Nov 28, 2003 2:55 AM | | I'm about your weight and have used a Cane Creek S-5 for about 2 years without problems. It's priced a little under the King but works just as well. |
| Another suggestion for S2 | Mikey Nov 28, 2003 8:38 AM | | I put an S2 on my Sugar a few months ago... only $34 from Universal Cycles http://www.universalcycles.com/hs.htm.
Sealed bearings, lighter than a King, smooth, reasonably priced. |
| Thanks all. I'll keep an eye out for good deals...nm | Smytty Nov 28, 2003 9:59 AM | | |
| have a c2...what's the diff between it and the S2? | steve3 Nov 28, 2003 10:12 AM | | I've used the c2 for 800 miles since June on my xc bike and have had no problems...I simply packed the bearings and cups with tons of automotive grease and then left it. I know some have had rusting problems, but mine are still good, most likely due to the grease.
what's the difference between the C2 and S2? |
| have a c2...what's the diff between it and the S2? | Kapusta Nov 28, 2003 4:57 PM | | It is the same as the S6 (I think that's what it is called) but with less expensive materials, thus a tad heavier. When I asked Cane Creek, they said that the S2 has better seals than the C2. This was about 2 years ago when the S2 first came out. They said that the S2 was going to replace the C2, but I am aware of that actually happening. |
