Sick after race??(5 posts)

Sick after race??Rayzorx

I started racing XC recently. I did a race yesterday and felt real good until after the race. My symptoms were like I had an intestenal flu. Nothing solid was coming out of me, and this continued all night.

I did my normal night before meal of pasta but I did have whole wheat pasta. 3 hours before the race I ate oatmeal, a banna, and an egg. Also my normal routine. Just before the race I had a Hammer gel and some coffee and asprin. Also my normal routine.

Any suggestions on what upset my insides so bad?

I take it from the tone of your post you have raced before and not had these symptoms.

I had something very similar happen within the last 2 weeks. Not in a race, but I rode pretty hard over a long course. My gut ached pretty bad at the end, and I got diarhea for about a day and a half.

Don't know if it's your problem, but I had the flu about a month ago, and it's been hard to get completely healthy. I get a dry cough if I get too tired.

At any rate, it's easy to get a digestive tract upset from racing, even if you ate the same stuff that never bothered you before. Did you race longer or more intensely than usual?

One thing to watch out for: make sure you dry out or otherwise sterilize your hydration system regularly. Nothing like bad water to give you the trots.

Walt,

You're right, I have raced before, and this time was more intense because I'm improving. I was wondering if it was the whole wheat pasta? That's the only different thing I ate.

Otherwise I've been pretty healthy this season and haven't had the flu. Maybe it was just a fluke? My next race is in two weeks so I'll see how that goes.

on your next race.

A far-out possibility: you have a minor gluten intolerence. Wheat is full of gluten. Try loading carbs with something else, but it's hard to avoid gluten!

Really though, you're trying to fix what may be a one time problem. It's very hard to define a problem with one data point. Your situation was probably pretty uncomfortable, but my advice is not to obsess on it unless it continues.
