Please help w/ 2004 Specialized Stumpjumper size(5 posts)

Please help w/ 2004 Specialized Stumpjumper sizeMark089

I am planning on ordering a new Stumpjumper. I live overseas and there is no distributor in the country which I am currently "deployed" therefor I am not able to visit a LBS to compare a Med to Large.

I'm 6'1" with a 33" inseam. My current ride (back home) is a 19" Schwinn Moab hardtail w/ 100mm Judy SL forks. I am very happy with the cockpit of this frame.

I normally would go w/ the seat tube measurement (standover height and top tube measurement) but with the design of this frame I cannot.

Well, my guess is large
But I am only judging on how they spread them out....sm, med, lg ,xlg
You see, I have a 17" hardtail Stumpjumper 03 and am judging by where they place the various sizes......on both bikes
I am 5 ft 8 in with 30 inch inseam and fit the 17 inch.
If I was getting the FS I am almost certain I would be getting the medium... since small bikes are very small like the 15 inch models.
But perhaps someone else will give you better detail
You should have indicated it was a FS bike just to clear up any confusion.

I was in almost exactly the same situation, just one size smaller. I am 5'9" and was riding a 17" 2001 Schwinn Moab 2, I just bought a 2004 Medium Stumpjumper FSR. The cockpit on the new stumpy fits me almost exactly the same as my Moab with a few exceptions. The reach to the handlebars is identical, the top tube is a little longer but the stem is a little shorter so my center of Gravity is slightly back of where it was. The wheelbase is a little longer so the bike feels slightly more stable. I was running my old bike at 100mm up front, so it was probably running a H/A of about 70.0 (steered a little slower than the new SJ with 70.5). To summarize; The new bike steers a little quicker (70.5 H/A), but feels more stable (longer wheelbase). Bottom line is that I was instantly comfortable on this bike. I rode a very technical trail on my second ride out and expected to suffer a little because the bike was unfamiliar to me, not the case, I was able to clean everything I could before only with a lot less body english and effort. Great bike, I think Specialized is going to sell a ton of them.

Don't concern yourself too much with labeled sizes. ie... sm, md, 18", 19" etc.

Measure the effective top tube of your current ride. Horizontally measure from the center of the head tube to the center of the seatpost. Use this and compare to the listed geometry of the stumpjumper.
