does anyone have a proposal to pitch MTB access to Parks dept.? i want to write up a proposal to send to all the parks in our area (NYC and LI).

i'm looking for ideas to put in my proposal. specifically i'm looking for all the good points/benefits as to why MTBing should be allowed access to certain trails in some city and county parks.

would it be helpfull if i became an IMBA rep for our area? if so, where do i get such training?

thanx...mike

I would suggest going to imba.com and go to the resource section and start reading, there are all sorts of articles and tips and angles to take. mtbaccess.com might have some stuff also. Then go read items from your opponents like wheeledlocust.com and sharetrails.net to get another perspective on how some of your proposal might be viewed by those on the extreme side and this will help you to write a bullet proof proposal.

Try to meet with the parks deparment in person also.

I would also contact your local imba rep, he may have some advice and an inside track also.

finally don't get frustrated, these things do not happen overnight remember you are dealing with the goverment!

If you would like more info about mtb access in Westchester County, check www.wmba.org. - some great stuff going on right now!

Here are two sample items that I copied from the list:

We need your help in getting the word out that IMBA's trail care crew
is coming OCT 16-19. We need to reach as many riders, clubs, groups and land
managers as possible. It is going to be a full weekend of mountain
bike related activities. We need a large group to show our politicians
(who are coming) that we are no small group. Please forward any info
to me off group. There is a lot happening and I will release a summary
of happenings in the near future. Hope everyone is enjoying this
great riding weather....

We are trying to arrange camping also let me know if you would
interested.

Today Mayor Bloomberg announced for the first time that the SI land
Fill >2500 acres will be used as a recreational park. For those that
have not heard we are already in discussions with the institute
contracted by the city to come up with uses. They actually approached
us and would like to see us mountain biking there ASAP nothing is set
in stone this is promising however. ----- This is a seperate and apart issue from our
dealings with the NYC Parks department. We will continue to push
ahead for a fair and beuatiful multi-use trail system at the very
least in QUEENS, THE BRONX and the >9500 Acres of Staten Island.

PS trail building work and tree planting this weekend at Wolfes Pond
come out and join NYARA, ARFE, And The Boy Scouts of America for some
trail work. And by the way you can ride on the pave trails in the
park so bring your bike..
