| re: What do you think about Trail Share? | Dustbuny Oct 2, 2003 1:32 PM | | Get em' off the trails. The way I feel about runners on bike trails is the same way I feel when I see a Mountain Bike on the road. It's degrading to the sport. PLus, runners are at risk, as well as bikers, when they get on our trails. Basically, I DON'T RIDE ON THEIR SIDEWALKS SO DON'T RUN ON MY TRAILS! Don't get me wrong though, I'm all for sharing, but basketball players and hockey bplayers don't play at the same time. Actually, this does tick me off a little now. Who posted this AGRHHHH........ |
| Shirley, you aren't serious? | Ken in KC. Oct 2, 2003 1:47 PM | | I don't know if I've ever heard of a more inane argument regarding trail use.
Of course trail runners and hikers can (and should) co-exist with mountain bikers on singletrack trails.
The biggest problem comes from the difference in speeds and in some cases, the fact that hikers and runners don't see us. On the other hand, there are times when trail runners pass bikes, depending upon the trail type.
One way to minimize the speed issue is to try and make the trail directional. Obviously this may not work in all cases, but it does help if hiker&runners are traveling toward bikers and vice versa.

| It can be a problem | Lighty Oct 9, 2003 9:18 AM | | I often ride China Camp in Northern California. I have to really watch my speed since there are more than a few trail runners. I am somewhat embarassed to admit I've came close to running over more than a few of them.
But if we're talking multi-use trails, that doesn't mean trail runners should get off "our" trails. They're not "our" trails.
I also use my older Gary Fisher for commute riding now mostly since I got a Kona Dawg. I've never thought I'd be "degrading the sport" by doing that. *sniff* now my feelings are hurt... |
| To share, or not to share? | mr_murf Oct 10, 2003 8:06 PM | | On one side, I would love to say kick them all off. The city I come from (London ON) has banned bikers from all but three of the trails: two of them you have to pay for and the third is unknown to the city. However, that would not change a thing. They have just as much right to be on the trails as we do, they just shouldn't get annoyed when they have to move aside for a biker, or vice-versa. It's amazing what happens if you are polite to them though. :D |
| On a designated multi-use trail? | dave54 Oct 5, 2003 8:28 PM | | No problem. They have the same right to use the trail as I.
I probably bother them about as much as they bother me (none) so it all evens out. |
