Kirtland Air Force Base has bypassed a public process and closed a key trail in the Otero Canyon trail system west of Albuquerque, NM.

Mountain bikers discovered a closure notice at the entrance to a two-mile segment that leads to a former fire lookout site and is considered the crown jewel of the system.

The closure came after a public comment period which showed widespread support for an alternative route for a security fence which had threatened the trail system. A decision on the fence had not been made.

The signage indicates that the closed trail is now in a firing range danger zone, but locals disagree.

For more information and how you can do something about this closure go to http://www.mtbaccess.org and click on the Otero Canyon alert.
